Hello,

I'm wanting to downsize from my current 135 gal. to a 55 gal. I have a DSB now, I'm wandering if I can move most of the sand to the new tank. I'm thinking that between the tank and the sump I can use most of the sand. Also, will this harm any of the creatures in the sand? One more thing, will two 175 MH be enough light or too much? I've never really had enough sand or live rock for the 135 so maybe I'll be able to have a better tank if I go smaller. Thanks in advance.

How old is the sand and have you had any algae outbreaks that were hard to get rid of?

If its not old, I would certainly use as much of the sand as possible in order to prevent another cycle. If you transfer fairly quickly (within a day) almost all of the life should survive without issue. Go to as deep as 6" if you want with the sand, certainly won't hurt the tank.

As for lighting 2x175 is enough for many things, although in no way is it too much! Ask the people who put 2x250W over their 20g tanks! :)
