Has anyone tried to use an Indoor/Outdoor Digital thermometer in their tank?
I got one of these for my dad from RadioShack because the display is HUGE!
I was looking at the probe wire. It is completely covered in plastic and no metal is exposed to the water. The wire is 6 feet long and looks pretty sturdy. What is even better is the display is like 1.5 inches tall and the thing only costs $9.

So what do you think?

What does it read compared to a glass thermometer? Or other types of thermometers? I dont think it was designed though to be submerged though from the sounds of it.

Not sure what it would stand up to.
They are designed to be in the elements. Extreme cold, heat, freezing rain with snow and all.

I will get one and keep the sensor in my sump away from the heat of the lights. For nine bucks, if it fails, minimal loss. :)

Hope it works though. I hate having to squint at my temperature all the time. (squint, wipe eyes, squint)

I have been using one for 6 months, (5 in my freshwater tank and the last month in my reef) it is fine and it reads more accurate than any of the 5 glass ones I have laying around here. the modle I have also rememnvers the highest and lowest temps that you have had sence the last reset which is kinda nice.

SWEET!!

I am doing it then. It's settled.
Man, that is so great.

It's nice every once in a while to be able to substitue and not sacrifice, ya know?!

i use em too. I have to replace em every year or so. Seems to be the life span of one near one of my fish tanks. Right now one of them only reads celcius, I wonder why it does that :D :D

That actually sounds like a good idea. But I think I will mount the head unit as far away from the tank as possible to keep corrosion down to a minimum

You might want to be careful. I used an I/O Thermometer called "Acurite" in the same way and it worked great--for a while. Then I suddenly started getting bizarre readings from the sensor in the water. My guess is that while it can take rain, ice, etc. it may not be resistant to salt. It might be possible that the wires corrode and may be toxic in the tank. (I say this with no knowlege of that type of chemistry, so take this for what it is worth) At any rate, I thought it was great while it lasted.

I use two Radio Shack Indoor/outdoor thermometors. I have been using one for 20 months with no problems what so ever, the other one has been in use on my nano reef for about 6 months. Man, you got a good deal, $9.00 8O . Mine cost $19.99, the second one I found on sale for $14.99 which was great. I plan on getting a third for my 40g reef, just waiting for a sale again. As far as accuracy, hmmm... the two actually read about .08 degree off from each other. The one on the 120g reef is right on with the glass thermometor I have, so I take that into consideration. Interestingly enough, my nano reef stays more stable temp wise than my 120g, probably due to the lighting differences and placement in the house so I put the one that seems a bit off on the nano...anyways, :D I digress
