I've been looking at some real estate in Prescott, AZ. The area looks very nice, people are nice, growing community, electricity is not run by Gray Davis!, etc.

Any aquarists in the area?

Hi

I am in PHX, but LOVE to move to the Prescott or Prescott valley area. Very NICE up there. Their temps are a lot friendlier than down in the valley of the sun aka Phoenix.

There are quite a few reefers here in the metro area. Several LFS and a club or two as well.

Keep in mind that Presscott is getting "hot", so the pricing are going up fast... Also we are a desert state and water is a problem and will only get worse.

I can't speak for Prescott as they have their own water system.

But here in Phoenix, the household (3 people with desert and traditional landscaping) uses about 5000 gallon a month in the winter and about 15,000 in the summer. The combined bill including taxs, sewer, trash, etc. ranges from about $40 in the winter and between $80-$120 in the summer depending on rain. Which this last year hasn't happen near enough.

The problems with water in this area that may or may not effect reefing...

1) We are in a major draught. We tied the all time record for least rainfall last year. The supply lakes are drying up, fast.

2) We have hundreds of thousands of people moving here every year. We are working on a new law requiring them to bring a lake and a mile of freeway with them or face the death penilty :D Lots of local voter support but there is that thing with the consituition...

3) The Prescott area is a farm/mountain area. They do not have the resources that PHX metro has. I think they are only on a well system. Not a good thing when it comes to running out of water.

4) If the draught gets bad enough there might be some really harsh restrictions on water use.

$40-120 isn't too bad considering that may be the only financial burden.

Electricity is about 50% cheaper in AZ. Saves me about $200 bucks a month on the electric bill.

Real Estate prices are about 35-50% cheaper then here in CA. I can buy just as big of a house or even bigger for half the price...whoopie!

High speed cable is available so I can still work for my employer in So Cal at same salary. There is also a large Computer solutions company based in Prescott I will check out.

I've only done some initial research into the AZ, but so far it sounds like a promising place to live.

I hope I can find some fellow reefs in the area. It's going to be tuff to make a 2 hr trip to Phoenix to get reef stuff compared to my choice of about 3 stores 10 minutes from my house...Maybe I'll open the 1st marine store in Prescott  .

The best thing I would get out of this move is to get away from Robin Hood (I mean Gray Davis)...Steal from the rich and give to the poor. He just doesn't understand that this isn't a movie and I've worked hard for what I have. It seems that each time I make a little more money I jump into a higher tax bracket and it just goes to someones welfare...It just doesn't pay to make money in CA.

I am not too sure about the IT in the area. I know there is a service company up there that serves the schools districts, but that is mostly PC tech type work. It sounds like you are more of senior guy, i.e. there isn't going to be anything in the state that will replace your current salary

Frankly I am getting out of IT in AZ or anywhere else for that matter. We are in a true depression here. If you can keep your current job and telecommute you have it made!!! Need a Cisco guy to telecommute too??? Just kidding, I want out.

The Cox network here smokes! Not like the cable services I have played with in CA.

The drive down the hill to Phoenix is about 90 mins. But I-17 is very prone to wrecks. You hear about a nasty one at least once a month on the news, who knows how many don't make the news. So... do not plan to commute to Phoenix for anything other than shopping from time to time.

Don't forget to bring your mile of freeway and lake or else :D

There are a lot of people living in Phoenix and Flagstaff area. What are they doing for work? There has to be some large firms there that need good Cisco guys (IC2Net, XO, ATT, Verizon, etc.). Who owns the major backbones that come into Phoenix? If AZ is growing I would also look into some of the big Real Estate companies. They must be interconnected with high speed lines. Where are you headed if you don't like AZ? These days almost all mid-large sized companies employee a full IT staff, there should be lots of work! Maybe I’m just “Orange County jaded” from reality.

I'll bring my lake (Aquarium) and my freeway (extend my driveway a few feet)

There was a point when it took a few minutes (literally) to find a IT job for a senior guy. But these days there just isn't anything but junk jobs. Yes there is a huge IT market here, we are a corporate HQ hot spot, AMEX, Wellsfargo, Intel (not the HQ but big none the less), Motorola, etc, etc. But most of the work has been project/contract work for many many years, and now that most projects have dried up, there are a lot of people looking for work. For example, I was in consideration for a job at a F100 company, I knew the hiring mgr, the job discription was like it was written for me, I have worked with or am friends with most of the current staff... I didn't get the job, because he had over 10 resumes from CCIE's with 10+ years on the job. Most companies here are not even taking resumes, they are swamped in them.

I will not be leaving AZ, just IT. I can not see anything but a dim future in that field here. Jobs are few and fare between, rates have droped by more than half for twice as work. Compaines have the attitude that the job market is so bad they can do anything they want, and they are right. I have been in IT for over ten years, and I have never seen it this bad...

Humm... guess we are going to have to amend that draft law to allow an reef tanks to count as freeway and lake

Whatever pays the bills and doesn't make me regret doing it :D

Actually... I am a woodworker that has made some good money doing custom work. So I will likely start making for profit again. I will start doing tank stands and canopys, while I work on the more "complex" work I do. Now that I am back into fish, I will likely start doing acrylic items too, fudes, sumps and the like.

I also will do some mining consulting and MAYBE some IT consulting for some of my freinds companies, BUT only as a last resort.

I have had many careers, but generally burnout after a few years, so I am deffinately do for a change after being in IT for more than a decade. It will be good to make sawdust on a more regular basis again :D

Hey Jason -

Phoenix area isn't too hot for networking right now. The consulting company I work for has several folks out there doing some stuff - mainly in the VoIP arena with Cisco ICM and addons and some security gigs - but all for one large client. Once that one dries up, pickins look relatively slim at this point.

Our sales guys are looking for business to pick up in the region towards the 2nd half of the year though...

Prescott has reservoirs for water, too, not just wells, but the population is growing a lot faster than the water resouces. Even when I lived there 20 years ago they had some problems in drought years.

I'm actually not a networking guy, I just have some experience in it. I'm more on the developer/programmer/project leader side of the table. It makes it really easy for me to do my job just about anywhere.

But besides the money (taxing) problems here it's a great place to live and if I decide to move it will be a really hard decision.

Once everyone stops panicking over Iraq things should be better. These days the economy is run on emotions and “business analysts” and not true business. All the news of the "bad economy" just makes people stop from expanding their own businesses. It is a pretty bad trend and I hope people in general stop listening to all the "business analysts" and use their own heads. Bad news always gets better ratings. If 9-11 was about a parade of people just being happy with life you wouldn't of had 5 days of 24/7 coverage. Bad news or the DOW dropping creates emotions, that leads to longer viewing = more ratings. Good news = "Sweet, money's good, why am I watching TV, lets go out and go shopping!"

Still no reefers in Prescott?! Wow...I could be a lonely reefer.
