I was at HD last night and saw two MH bulbs. both Phillips:
400w mogul base 3600 lumens 4000 kelvin requiring a M59 ballast

One was labeled ED37 and is HUGE for $23.67
The other labeled ED28 and was not quite as big for $35.97

Here's my q...
Are these good (decent bulbs)?
I an building a 55 gal long and want to put a variety of things in it. All will be DIY except for the tank it self.

Any input would be greatly appreciatied

hi.
There is nothing wrong with them, but 4000K is too yellow for most people's taste. Some coral may lose color due to the lowered color temperature.

Actually, we bought one of these and tried it out. I wouldn't say it's too yellow. Mainly because it's so yellow it's more of an orange!

Yes, it's cheap, but trust me, you don't want it!

Home Depot has a liberal return policy, try it yourself, you'll see.

I've run the cheap HD halide bulbs before, and never had any problems with coral growth or anything like that. As has been mentioned, they are very yellow, but I overcame that with a couple of VHO actinics.
