Well today I had yet another maxi jet 1200 bite it. A quick count of powerheads running in my shop is 3 mag 5's, 19 Rios of various sizes, some years old and a couple are new, and 7 maxijet 1200 of which almost all of them were new.

Of the rios I had 1 crap out on me in the past two months (last night) and of the maxi jets, I had 5 go out.

This sucks. At least the gfcis worked this morning.

You do clean them, right? If you soak the impellers in vinegar once a month, it will disolve the CaCO3 built up internally that binds the impeller.

All my pumps are clean inside. There's never anything restricting movement. If the maxis were failing due to buildup, I would kinda think the same would happen to the rios since they are all in the same system.

Who knows why I am not doing well with the maxis. Just one of those things.

I don't have any of the 1200's but I have 6 of the 1000 powerheads and they've been running great now for close to 6 years. Perhaps they have been cleaned a handful of times thats it.

Hrmmm...I've been running the same 600, 900, and 1200 in my tank for nigh on 3 years now w/ no failures. Strange...

Sounds like you need a couple ReefTec's in there Peege.

Seriously tho, how are those doing for you?

LOL, the ones I got I like so far except for how low in the tank they are. I figured if I liked them I'd replace all my powerheads with these guys. I'll prob buy another 18 more and use them on timers.

Yup, but knowing Tunze it's going to be way more expensive than the ReefTec models. I've *heard* (definitely don't quote me on this!) that they're going to retail for around $300 US. wow. 8O

How are the maxis biting it? Impeller going out, or the pump shorting,or what? These are one of the few UL listed pumps on the market, and they last forever.. it's extremely rare to hear of any problem with them, much less 5 out of 17 or whatever.. odd. I could write a few pages on things rios have done to me over the years (I no longer use them).
