I just got my shipment of Figi cured live rock from liveaquaria.com. I had ordered overnight delivery so not to loose too much life. Well the rock came in a styrofoam box with 2 heat pads which is good. Although, the rock felt pretty cold to the touch. Also the rock was just wrapped in wet newspaper. can this be good?

Most rock is shipped with wet newspaper, so you don't pay for the weight of the water. I got my uncured Tonga rock form them and it did loose allot of the bright pink and yellow sponge but its now encrusted in coralline. Follow the cycling instructions that they provide, the 100% water changes help you from having an algae bloom.

When I got my shipment from them, I didn't scrub the rocks.
But I did siphon off debri as it formed.
I noticed a film formed on the rocks.

I just brushed them with my hand in a bucket of tank water to get any loose debris off, only scrub them if you get undesirable algae after it cycles, If you do the water changes this should not happen. Keeping the light off until it's cycled it's a bad idea either.

Are these the 2 100% water changes after cycling that you mentioned in another forum? Just wanting to make sure, I'm going to try to take that approach in my tank to avoid as much algae as possible.

So... What is the best way to cure Live Rock?

I just got another 16# of some really REALLY skanky stuff to add to my tank. I left it in the little styrofoam cooler that I brought it home in and filled it up with tank water. I added the Berlin skimmer that I'm not even using on my tank anymore for the first few days (the cup was half full in 2 hours!). I also put a shop light over the top 12 hours a day. The Mag 7 pump is keeping the water pretty warm. I removed the skimmer a few days ago to let the pump really push the water around.

OK, OK, I havent done a search here. Anything else i should do besides waiting a few weeks for it to un-stinkify?

What you're doing is fine, but basing any decisions on smell will not be very useful. Hopefully I'm not rehashing anything you already know, if so, I'm sorry. You should have an ammonia spike, followed by a nitrite spike, but once both of these go to 0, your cycle is complete. you likely will then have higher nitrates, but since you won't be putting that water into the tank, it's kind of like doing a 100% water change anyway. Just test your ammonia and nitrite in a couple of weeks and see where you are.
Just a note, I did test every other day with mine, and I'm glad I did. My ammonia test would never actualy register 0, but I did see a spike and then a decline to a constant. I eventually took the water into the fish store for a test and they found no ammonia. Some of the home kits don't really register exactly.

Kevin,
The 2 100% WC are something that I have done in the past and with my current tank. Most live rock distributors will suggest one 100% or a 50% but I have found that two 100% are more effective, there is still some die off even after the tank has cycled. The WCs are just an easy way to get rid of the initial level of NO3 after the cycle. It won't hurt the rock as long as you mix the new salt water outside of the tank and it helps from ending up with a tank full of hair algae. I still got some hair algae in the first few weeks but some turbos fixed that and now I don't even have enough algae to feed the herbivores in the tank, my snail population also dropped due to starvation thankfully they are cheep.

Let us know how you do with your tank.

Thanks again, I have an RO/DI unit, and I've always mixed my owned saltwater so the 100% change should be too hard.

I'll let you know how it goes. i just got my lights and I'm slowly buying things until I'm ready to go again. Looking forward to curing some rock soon though!

I bought my LR from them, but didn't scrub it. Just blew stuuf off w/ a powerhead. I'm glad I did it that way now cause it was carrying baby corals and zoos and sponges! The best stuff in my tank came on the rock!
