hi.
PE is a good plastic for water/SW storage, but you can get them cheaper elsewhere. HDPS also works well. How big do you need?

I heard that you can get them pretty cheap from prickling plant, but I never personally found any around in OC area. You can also ask those Chinese restaruant for the empty soy sauce buckets (5 gallons), but I guess you can get them pretty cheap from home depot.

Hey KJ,

That's exactly what I bought when I got supicious of my rubbermaid trash containers leaching something into my RO/DI water. In retrospect, I believe I panicked, grabbed at straws, and spent way too much money for these industrial containers. From a lot of the other threads / posts I see here, I have a feeling that the much less expensive trashcan approach is just fine. Having said that, I really like my US Plastics containers. One of them even has a floating lid.

Yeah, I think I will go the trashcan approach when it will cost about 70 bucks to get two containers to my house as apposed to 15 bucks to go buy 2 trash cans from Home Depot. Trash cans just look a little ugly sitting in the backyard patio.

Check out your local winemaking store or supplier. I picked up a pretty looking 50 gal plastic wine vat type deal with a spigot, floating lid and all. Nope. Not used, new. $60 well spent. Attached a float valve in it and presto. Also picked up a few 5 gal pails (used but clean) that I use for sw makeup. Don't remember the exact cost but under $10 I think. I found this place on a fluke, right around the corner from my lfs. Gotta be something like that in your area.

By the way, while we're on this subject, how long is it safe to store salt water in one of those regular 5G jugs you can get at an LFS? Does it ever stagnate or go bad at all? Thanks. -Ben

Man, you're the 4th person I have seen on the board today that lives in HB. Crazy. Not sure if there is a limit on the shelf life of mixed salt water. I think it should be good for at least a couple weeks.

Yeah crazy, ain't it. I noticed that also when I joined this board. I never knew reefkeeping was so popular in HB. I wonder how many of them are programmers also? Ha! -Ben
