Does anyone use the same pump for skimmer and as a return to the tank? What are the advantages and disadvantages for such a setup? I have an ETSS-600 skimmer, MAK-4 pump, and a Sequence 4600 pump. Trying to decide if I should use a MAK-4 for the skimmer or split the Sequence. TIA

hi.
In a splitted setup, it can be more difficult to control the flow rate and pressue to the skimmer. I am not familiar with your skimmer, but make sure that your pump can handle the back pressure from both skimmer and return, and enough flowrate to keep your skimmer in high efficiency.

i'm running a mag 1200gph pump that splits off between my skimmer and the return. the main tank is 75g with a 20g long sump.

the less heat the better.

after the T, i put in two ball valves.

it's pretty easy to control and saves space in the sump area.

Keith,
Space and heat is not an issue - both pumps are external. The issue here is how hard/easy is it to control the flow to the skimmer with a gate valve and how to know how much flow should go to the skimmer.
