Rubios Fishtanks and Coraline algea!

I just wanted to say that all of you that always say coraline algae will only grow in strong light conditions are VERY wrong.

Take into evidence sample A:

Go to your nearest Rubios. They have fish only tanks that have been established for a good year now. Their tanks are lit by one sometimes two NO flourescent 50/50 bulbs. Their rock is loaded with coraline algae.

Now sample B:

Why does coraline algae grow on the under side of rocks. If it was dependant solely on strong lighting it would stay on the lit areas.

Do a search on coraline algae or live rock care and check out the numerous threads!

It has been my exprience certain coralines grow better under dimmer lighting ie the dark purple colors.....I also think it has a better chance to grow as it doesn't have to compete with the more light loving microalgaes.

In my experience, coraline seems to grow better in lower light conditions, especially the darker purples. Haven't seen many threads to the contrary.

The Rubios in Fresno doesn't have one flake of coraline.

I agree with the fact that coraline can sometimes grow more under less wattage or intensity. Not to say you dont need intense lights but almost everytime I go and look at a tank with just VHOs or PCs and no Metal halides they have more of the bright pink and purple coraline.

different types of coralline have different light requirments

i had more of the pinks and purples growing in my high light areas, and some beautiful reds growing in the dark areas behind the reef face, and towards the bottom of the tank corners.

Ditto to Vitz's comment. Mine are the same way. And I also agree that different coralline grow under different light intensities.
