Bryopsis I got rid of it!

I finally got rid of all traces of my bryopsis algae. I picked out as much as i could by hand. I got a fox face rabbit fish who ate some of it. I think the biggest help was a tip I got from someone at a lfs. I began toping off with Kalkwasser mixed with vinegar. I use 3 teaspoons of kalk, 120ml of white vinegar mixed with 3 gallons of r/o water for my top off. Within 3 weeks all the bryopsis is gone. I think the kalk and vinegar helped the most, as the foxface would eat very little only if he was really hungry. It's the kalk that does it. kalkwasser precipitates out phosphates. addition of the vinegar dampens the pH spike from the kalkwasser

They way i understand it is the vinegar forces more of the kalk to "absorb" into the water leaving less milky white leftover. I know kalk is what does it, but i guess the vinegar helps get more kalk in the tank. I know it worked for me.

If I dissolved 2 parts of acetic acid and 1 part calcium hydroxide in my topoff water, how big would the ph spike be relative to plain kalkwasser? If the reaction makes a water molecule and dissociated acetate and calcium ions, how rapidly could it be added to a reef system?

ok, I am a bit confused. Is the reason for adding vinegar so you can add the water faster, or so you can get more calcium in the tank with the same amount of make up water? If it is the second, do you need to add more than 2 tsp per gallon to disolve more Kalk?

Podman adding vinegar to kalk kills the ph spike that it would have created.

I too fail to see the relation between adding kalk and bryopsis disapearing, I had bryopsis and I dosed kalk and it had no affect.

Then one day, for no apparent reason, all the byropsis crashed, no tank parameters that I tested changed, I have no idea what nutrient it ran out of, I know it wasnt no3/phosphate, I had plenty of those, I feed very excessive amounts..

When I had bryopsis and somewhat overdosed Kalk (which used to happen with some frequency given my 1st attempts at diy auto topoff) the bryopsis would crash the next morning.

I am not a chemist but according to those articles kalkwasser precipitates phostphates out of solution. I am assuming one of bryopsis algae's main food source would be phosphates. Therefore i am assuming that kalk does nothing but good for elimintaing phosphates which in turn eliminates the bryopsis algae. The vinegar helps to absorb more kalk into the water which adds more kalk to your tank speeding up the elimination of phosphates. This is the way it was explained to me, and it worked for me. This is just m y expierience.

(i don't dose the stuff anymore and never used the vinegar solution)

i have used plain kalkwasser to kill algae before by utilizing the spike.
