Hi, all.
We are still fighting this crap  , whether it be DINO. or CYANO. We are at the point of thinking about taking the whole tank apart and replacing the sand bed, and cleaning all the rock. :( Since this stuff has been growing, our xenias, and a few leathers have been acting odd. Not to mention it has destroyed our blue gorgonian. I have done dozens of water changes, syphoned it out numerous times, but it still grows back overnight, it seems. The coverage on the rocks is getting worse, and I am at a loss as to what we can do. Other than doing what I mentioned, are there any other ideas how to battle this crud? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. THANKS.

looks like brown diatoms on your sand bed. i'm currently fighting with diatoms that just won't quit. it's EXTREMELY frustrating

We got a bunch of turbo snails and they have done a wonderful job of taking the crap off the LR, but they won't go near the aragonite. if you put them down there they just crawl back on the LR.

If it is cyano, you can kill it with erythromycin. But cyan is usually red or blue-green and forms a mat that you can easily dislodge with a swish of water. If that doesn't describe what you have, then an antibiotic won't help. If it is diatoms, and you are only 4 to 6 months into the establishment of your tank, leave it alone and ride it out. It will eventually go away.

The tank is over 2 years old at this time. Unfortunately we went through CYANO a few months back, and won that battle. However this is a butt kicker, we did treat it as you said but had no effect at all. :( I come home each day and just want to scream when I look at the tank. Should we keep up the syphoning and water changes, or just replace the bed and clean the rocks? Sounds desprate, but this crap sucks.
Thanks again. Harpo

One of your turbos probably died without you knowing(esp one that is large) and caused a bloom. You could also look into the food you feed, sometimes some rotten matter/food gets in there and will cause a bloom as well.
