I was thinking about replacing my green chromis with Lyretail Antias - a male and a female. are they really as tough to keep as teh cautionary words in Bob Fenner's book suggest? Doesnt say impossibe but says tough. I've kept a lot of tough things before and my 150g reef tank is free of nasty types, would be curious about people's reactions. thanks.

Listen to Bob. They require a great deal of space, and if I recollect they are planktonic feeders.

If you're good at the tough stuff then I'll assume that you're into doing your research before you dive in. So, if after your research you think you can do it, then just let us know how it goes.

I agree, they are not easy, although some varieties are better suited for captivity than others. Serranocirrhitus latus is from what I've seen one of the better choices but they do have a big sticker. I have also heard that they are best kept in groups of five or more.

Go to the RDO library and read the Anthias article. Bartletts and Lyretails and not that hard to keep, and you should be fine in a 150. I have 4 in mine. They do love to eat, and I feed them pretty much any time I walk by the tank.

Thanks for the article Righty - that's great. Fenner on Wetwebmedia.com seems to imply that the fatheads won't school however. I really like schooling behavior - does anyone have anthias that don't school?

Thanks again.

I would love to ass Anthias to my but man they must be fed quite a bit. The hardest thing to do is to get them to eat, once you are over that hill its smooth sailing. As for schooling i have never seen them school in a small tank.

My anthias were a pleasure to own, they ate like pigs though. Righty is correct in that I fed them about everytime I walked by the tank.

OK, I know Paul very well and I know he's not into this kind of thing. I'm getting a little worried tho. I just dropped off about 7 small A+ sps colonies at his house (gettting ready to move my tank in a few months) First he doesn't have any way of checking his SG on his own tank and now I read something about his butt and Anthias ass, I feakin out here.

Paul, pull it together man.

I have a 100g tank in a print shop (4 years old) with a few softies and 120lb of live rock. We have a trickle filter, a very good venturi skimmer (Deltec 600 which replaced a far inferior Turboflotor - best skimmer money can buy IMHO)

i used to look after it myself , but a guy from the LFS looks after it now and over a perios of about 6 months he put in 7 anthias. We also have 5 fat green chromis, a yellow tang, a Hippo, a Firefish, a lawnmower Blennie, a tank bred Percula. All but the Hippos, the anthias and tang are recent additions.

The tank is not fed of Saturdays or Sundays because we're closed then. Chistmas did not pose a problem either (fed 5 times in 10 days)

We have had no problems with the Anthias, although we lost 2 gobies soon after they were put in. I was very surprised to read Fenner to find how he says difficult Anthias are.

To me they seem no more difficult than green Chromis. Perhaps the ones sourced in the UK are better than those in the US.

I have several types of Anthias and have not found them to be difficult to keep either. The hardest part seems to get the LFS to get any in.

HTH,
Kevin
PS: I was able to get all of them to eat within 2 days with raw shrimp from the store. All three types I have it's their favorite food.
