I am in the early planning stages of my next big project, a shallow lookdown, open top, clam viewing tank. I am planning to keep some sps/lps corals but mostly lots of clams. I am hoping it will be 100-150g. I figure it will be about 15" deep and will sit low so folks can view it by looking down on all the inhabitants. I want to have fish in there and need ideas of the least likely to jump out of an open top. I want mellow fish as well, ones who won't cause others to jump :). I just want to get different ideas.

What about an anthias harem?...I have never heard of them being jumpers. My two sunburst anthias in my 120g reef are extrememly mellow and not shy at all. They come right up to me for feedings. This may be unusual though. Anyways, any thoughts please share them.

I have an open top on my 40g reef with a pendant light and the clown pair and Flame angel are fine with the perilous open top so I know some fish will be fine.

If this is a look-down viewing, you will need brilliant colored fish and wide body as well. Fish should not be fast swimming. I'd take a small shoal of ocelaris or pipefish. I'd also keep it to be single specie of fish only.

Anthias are good choice, except the price may be high to keep a school of them.

My experience with the square spot anthias leads me to beleive they are serious jumpers, I believe I have read this about anthia in general in Scott Michaels chapter on them in Reef Fishes vol. 1 as well. My experience with sunburst anthias (Serranocirrhitus latus) is that they are more mellow as far as freaking out and leaping out of the tank.

When startled, my male square spot would slam into the canopy so hard I expected him to be dead from the impact each time.

hmmmm, thanks mulberry for the info. I will do some serious research on the jumping potential of anthias but from what you are saying they may be out of the question.

Any other ideas?
