At my LFS, they sell DT's phytoplantom but store them on a shelf. According to the label on the bottle, it must be stored in refri. I am not sure that it must be stored in the refri after opening it or at all time?
Please be advised. Thank you.

I opened it up and it was the FOULEST oder I have ever known. I an getting a lump in my throat right now just thinking about it. Dead phyto stink!!!!!!!!!!

I have been using this product for over a year and very happy with it but I would not buy it if it hasn't been kept cold.

After the DT is shipped from the original source, the phyto can survive at room temperature for a few weeks and quite a few months in the fridge. After a few months in the fridge, the nutritional value is supposed to go down some.

There is a date stamped on the product but I believe it assumes it is stored in the fridge. With stuff sitting on shelves for who knows how long, I wouldn't chance it.

Dgin. If kept in the refridge, it will retain its nutritional valeu for 6 months, if left on the shelf, it will lose all nutrition after a few days. I would NOT buy anything that is left on the shelf. If you see a store that has our product on the shelf instead of the fridge, Id look for a new place to shop. Feel free to contact us through www.dtplankton.com to let us know of any store that has our product on the shelve. If you provide us with a phone number of the store, we will contact them to educate them a little on our product. or educate them on how to read the label, especially the part that says "MUST BE REFRIGERATED.

Rod, if you purchase this product through MO as most of us are forced to do, are you saying it must be packaged and shipped similar to live stock?

If it is hot outside, yes, it shoud be shipped with icepacks and a styro. Most good MO companies will ship in styros and ice if/when needed. It will be ok for a day or 3 if the waether is cool. If you leave it out of the frige for an hour or even a day will not cause harm if its not a common practice, but LFS that leave it on the shelve are clueless.

Rod,
So would you say you do not encourage shipping via 2 day mail if the product is to be shipped from your facility to LFS's in the southern or southwestern states?

If it's a bad practice, imagin the same bottle will go through another warm-up when being shipped from mail-order house to the consumer again in un-insulated/coolpacked boxes..........

Does DT offer selling directly to consumers to make sure the consumer receives freshest product possible?

-Good points Dan.
-Rod, if I purchase some milk that has gone bad I can give it a sniff test, how can I know for sure if your product is no longer fresh?

No, Im not saying that at all. Shipping the product is fine. We send out all of our product in 1.5" styros with icepacs. Most of the mail order houses also use styros. If the weather is cool, a 2 day shippment will not kill the product that is not shippend in styros. Our distributors and many of the LFS receive the product over night, and the rest within 48 hours. With 1.5" styros and icepacks the product stays cold even in hot weather
We do not sell directly to the consumer, Sorry
Dan: You can also use your nose to tell if the product is bad. Remember that phytoplankton will have a slight oder. The denser the culture the more smell. DTs is concentrated, so it will have more "smell" than home brewed greenwater. Bad phyto will nearly knock you off of your feet. Its something that you wont want, or need to take second sniff test.

Rod, in the future will there be other algaes offered than just nanno? I realize that you cant give away your secrets. I have bought DTs and will continue, but I also grow other types of algaes and I was hoping for some help. All I want to do is be able to keep small pure monocultures for innoculating my 2 liters. How do I go about the refrigeration process? Should I reduce the amount of fertilizer added to the cultures? Any help if you can give me would be appreciated.

Louis, Yes, in the future we hope to have other species and or blends. But it will be a while yet. Before we put anything on the market that says it has XX month shelve life, we will test it for XX months. We also need to be sure that it stands up to the concentration process. We like to stand behind our product, and like to be sure that it is a good product that actually has nutrition. We dont want to sell tap water, or something that has no nutritional value at all. Some phytos only stay nutritious while they are still in the growth stages. T-iso is completely nutritionless when frozen.

We are able to store our product with a refrigerated shelf live because nutrients and metals are removed during our concentration process.
If you reduce the amolunt of nutrients that you are feeding, wouldnt the growth be effected?
Sorry that I cant help more
Good Luck

Thanks Rod for the reply. I apologize for not clearly explaining my reason for refrigeration. My hope was to try and have small test tube cultures of algae in the fridge to innoculate newly setup 2 liters. With the info from the Plankton Culture Manual the expiration date of unrefrigerated subcultures is 7 to 10days. This is too much handling of these innoculating cultures and I risk contamination with each dilution every 7 to 10days. I hope to grow the initial culture once under as close as I can sterile procedures to which I will then split into many testtubes. From these tubes stored in the fridge I can innoculate many 2 liters over a period of months and not worry about the purity of innoculating culture. My 2 liter cultures will be fully fertilized. And your response as to limiting the fertilizer in your culture answers my question. Thanks again.
