Greetings all, this is my first post under a new name I use to post here but it was about a year ago and can't remember my user name or password so I just went with something new. LoL Sorry I haven't been able to visit and post, I joined the military and had to take down my reef set up and give it to my brother who loves it and is making it work. Well now I am stationed here in beautiful hawaii for three years and after snorkeling Hanuma Bay and trying to get my Scuba lisence the bug has bit me again. Time to build another reef. Unfortunantly, now I have rules and regs where the largest aquarium I can have is a 30g. I think this is something I can negotiate with my sergeant. However, I have ALOT of ideas of what I want to do. I am not sure if I want to use actual sea water but I was thinking I could use actual sand substrate from the ocean to seed the tank. For lighting I am thinking about doing PCs I'm not really looking at doing alot of corals, maybe a few here and there. I'm still gathering alot of different ideas and trying to do the best aquarium I can afford. So things are gonna have to be cheap too, alot of DIY stuff. If any of you could give me ideas, or pictures of tanks for ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Again!!

I would go for liverock and a DSB regardless of tank size. And a good protein skimmer. I don't know about using actual sea water. Maybe JC Delbeck could speak up about the seawater in Hawaii. You probably could collect your own live sand. But you might want to quarentine it for a while to see if you have any bad hitchers.

Anyway, just wanted to throw out the first few suggestions. Welcome to Reefs.org and thank you for serving in the military. Service men are A-ok in my book!

Good luck!

I agree with louey, and will go farther and suggest that you take a look at brandon's (is it followed by "429"?) nano/pico set ups. I see no reason why that approach cannot also be "sized up".

Coooooooooool! Wish I was there too! Ok.............this is what you do.....go snorkelin with the women there and forget the fish tank dummy!!!!!!! Alright..so your a nerd..get some psychiatric help..I am sure your Superiors can hook you up...right! Ok so you don't want help...and are thinkin suicide unless you have a salty tank. Go get a piece of rock out of the ocean and stick it in your 29 gallon tank..with some of that sand on the beach after the high tide just leaves. Don't worry about quarantine.thats not any fun! Most of the fun is seein waht cool **** comes out of your rock and sand....right! Ok cheap **** lighting.use a normal flourescent light.maybe 1 watt per gallon. Trust me on this.! Stick a couple maybe three fish in there and a cheap ass Seaclone skimmer....or a Prism..and wallah! Ok you may want to add a aqaua clear 200-250 power filter.and run carbon. Lets see.nah.you don't need a pump. Do weekly water changes and then maybe monthly then maybe bimontly. Have Fun! I actually think it would be more fun to voulunteer to kill Iraqi's for better pay and maybe save your money to get a real nice tank when you get home. That is if you live and don't come home all f*cked up! Goodluck soldier!!!!!!! Thankyou for your service to this wonderful country. Hope you get a real big tank out of this.

usafresq1....You can go to the aquarium in Honolulu and they will give you all the clean filtered saltwater you can carry for free.

I agree that you should go for a sandbed and liverock for the tank. You should also get a protein skimmer as well. PC's would be fine. You can save some money by making your own hood and cabinet. I have attached a link to a picture of a 29 gallon tank I have (not quite as long as a 30, but similar). This tank has a hang on protein skimmer and hang on filter (to move water and for occasional carbon use). 4 small fish (damsel, six line wrasse, maroon clown, PJ cardinal), T. squamosa, two shrimp, a brittle star, cloned BTA and various corals. Lighting is one 55W 10K bulb and two 24W 10K/7100K bulbs. This tank probably has more corals than you would want and I will soon find them a 58 gallon home. This is just one set up as an example.

Also try doing a search here on 30 gallon and 29 gallon tanks...you will probably find more setups.

This is some of the worst advise I have ever seen. Collecting the rock is prolly illegal. 1 watt per gallon, without even asking what he intends to keep?

Bangbang, your post is more like drunken rant than advice and IMHO this is not the appropriate forum for it.

You are entitled to your opinion......alot of my posts are meant to be humorous. Somethin you and some other pinheads don't seem to grasp. Like the Poolroom posts. I believe this forum needs a bit of humour added. I think that any responsible Aquarist does enough research to know what he/she should attempt within the parameters required for keeping livestock. I do know some people that keep softies and mushrooms succesfully using normal output flourescents. I don't think it is illegal to use some sand from the ocean.......and certainly not illegal to use the water. Dah! Hey use your head. He could even place some porous rock in the ocean himself in the ocean himself and farm his own liverock. Illegal..............LOL. Give me a break. I don't think he plans on removin a reef to furnish a 30 gallon tank with liverock. Well try to have fun. 8O

Your posts have gone from quirky, to strange, to annoying and now have become downright offensive and idiotic. There is nothing wrong with a bit of humour but your comments are only funny to yourself and make others feel un-comfortable.

I have some links to 65-gallons-and-under-set-ups here! Smaller tanks can be stunning! Check out this little box!

*wispers* And frankly I was recently directed here from a MACO class, and I was more than a little disappointed in this board, as Bangbang's shark post was the first thread I clicked on.
