Hi, LFS is trying to sell me a ozoniser. The selling point is that redox readings will improve etc....Is it that important? Is anyone using it and can you see the benefits? Thanx for your response.

Don't use ozone and don't much care about redox readings. I'm sure you'll find someone here who still uses it. It really is an older way of running a tank and not needed anymore. You don't even hear it talked about much anymore.

agree with reefland :)

ozone can be dangerous. it can also give you a 'false' carrying capacity and a 'dependence' syndrome in the tank(when the O3 stops, tank crashes-a phenomenon written about in some of the literature written when O3 was the rage)it's corrosive, and can pose a health threat to lungs and mucous membranes.

the lfs wants your money.

any tank that is properly run will 'redox' at the right rate.reduction-oxidization potential is not really an indication of how healthy, stable, or successful your tank is.especially if that is the sole tool used.some great tanks measure low redox, some crappy sick tanks show good redox...

try not to fall into the mode of relying on gadgets to judge your tank(test kits, and skimmers excepted, of course.the fanciest thing you may want to get is a good digital pH meter/probe.good observation, patience, and a little bit o' good ole horse sense will serve you far better than an overpriced widget. :)

Nothing is wrong with the tank.He has a Sander ozoniser sitting on the shelf gathering dust which he thinks he can palm off to me.
The selling point was cleaner water ,raised redox,i thought i`d ask before going further .

You can use ozone to basically turbo-charge your skimmer- but of course it's not as simple as regular turbo charging.
If you need to boost your skimmer capability, you have other problems, or an undersized skimmer. I bought an ozoniser when I first got into this hobby.
It sure makes a pretty sitting-on-the-shelf-dust-collector now...not.

A high quality PH probe is a much better alternative, and you will learn a lot more stuff on the way as you try to figure out all the wonderful things that make your PH go up and down!

...And then one day you'll start thinking...maybe I can actually do without my SKIMMER!.... 8O

Don't use ozone in a reef tank. Corals don't react well to the high oxygen levels or the incomplete reduction of ozone. I was just talking to Peter Wilkens about a week ago and he said it will only do more harm than good.

The only time in a reef tank you may see a benefit from it is, if your amount of oxygen consumers (aka fish or bioload) is very high, e.g. 30 large fish in a 250 gallon reef.

But I know it sure makes the water nice and clear, even a little blue.

My opinion is the same as the others save your money for a good pH meter or even a chiller.

tell him to come online and tell us why you need that ozonizer! LOL

This guy's a jackass if he's trying to pawn this on you. Don't give him any more business. And tell him what you discovered from your friends online!

Montreal and several other large cities use ozone to sterilize the drinking water. That tidbit alone makes me wonder about using it in the aquarium.

Btw, if you've dumped so much ozone into the water that it turned blueish, I'm surprised anything lived. That's an awful lot of oxygen.

I use ozone. It works GREAT for my skimmer and tank. Definitely better than using just the euroreef alone, but that just IMHO.
