My Colt coral that i purchased about 5 months ago has tripled in size. I was wondering how many frags can you cut at one time?? Also what should i expect after i do the operation??

I have cut as many as three big branches at a time with no problems. I cut mine in the main tank without moving the parent. It seems to take a while for the frags to recover, but the parent is fine in a couple of hours. The cut point looks like the healed part when you cut the branch of a tree. I use medical shears and cut fast.

Ditto
I use a ex-act blade.
Funny thing is, the parent seams to come back stronger than before for me.

Thanks guys...Still a little nervous about cutting it. Where exactly do you guys make the cut?? Also how do you attach it to another piece of rock? Someone told me to use a rubber band. Sorry for all the questions, just want to do it the right way....

You can cut it anywhere. If your going to trade it, make sure you cut a tradable size.
As for attaching it, I use superglue (gel type).
Find a piece of rock you want to attach it to, blot it dry with a paper towel.
Add a few drops of the gel on it, let it form a skin (usually 30 seconds) and hold the frag to it (outside the water) until it sticks.
place back into the tank.
Like stated before, the parent will recover in about 1-2 hours.
the new frag may take a few days to come around.
When I trim my toadstools, the new frags take about a week.
PP me if you need any more help.
don't be afraid, just have a good sharp knife.

Thanks again....I'll give it a shot. Wish there was someone close enough to trade with. Looks like i will have to trade with the LFS. Well you know what I'll get out of that. Oh well....

What kind of super glue you used LFS42 and Osama, I use Zapgel to frag my Acros. I use the toothpic method to frag my Colt, but i like to try the super glue. Try this www.eparc.com, Soft and SPS propagation. Ralphyhp.

Ralph; I use coral glue that's it's name from premium aquatics & I also use the toothpich method to anchor to the rock. & glue the toothpick I am not too succesful gluing the softies to the rock directly. coral glue does not set as fast as super glue and I got used to working with it I never tried super glue myseld.

Well guys the super glue method is not working. Now with the toothpick, do you shove the toothpick through the base of the frag and then rubber band it to the rock using the toothpick? Then how long do you wait to remove the toothpick??

I have never had luck with superglue on colts. for the toothpick method just spear the frag through the base and hold it to the rock with rubber bands.......trick is not to make the ruber bands too tight or it will couse the toothpick to cut through the frag over time and the frag will just float away. You want it only tight enough to keep the frag from floating away from the rock. I use plastic toothpicks and leave them in for at least a month to be on the safe side. The frag can take as much as 2 weeks to recover. Good luck..the first one is always the hardest.

Super glue gel by 3M
I got it from walgreens.
I dry off the rock, add some glue, let it dry for 30 sec-1 min.
Hold the frag onto the rock for another minute, then place in the water.
If your looking to just populate your own tank, smaller pieces can be shoved into holes in your live rock. In about 1 week, they should attach themselves.

I hold my frags with small "multi-purpoose ties" those for electrical jobs. I used rubber bands before but sometimes they cut the frag in two pieces.

good luck.

I hope you don't mine my cutting into your post. But what kind of lighting do yall have and tank size? (how much light do they need too) I was really wanting to get a colt. Thanks. And good luck on your fraging I think that would be so cool to do.

Well I have a 70gal. with 4-55watt PC's, and a 175 watt 10k Ushio bulb. Colt grows like a weed. Very easy coral to keep. Count on fragging it though.....
