I just got a US wmd40rlt for my 100 gallon reef. It is way too noisey and has too much flow for my single corner overflow. I am going to switch to a 30RLT. Is there much difference in noise between the Japanese and US models. I have been using a Quiet One but had it overheat and cook my tank. A new one still runs hot.

Any other opinions on circulation pump versus pressure. I am using it to pump through sump below tank and back up to outlets about 4 feet of head pressure. Jim

If it is used as a return pump from your sump, I believe you need the pressure rated one. I would check on the maximum head pressure they recommend on the recirculation pump. If it were a closed-loop, I would agree totally. A non-pressure rated pump may work, but the life of the pump may be lowered by using it in a pressure application.

I just bought a 40 and asked Iwaki the same question. What they said was that they haven't noticed any reliable evidence that the Japanese last longer then the American, which is the rumor, but said that the Japanese defintiely runs hotter because of its more compact design.

I currently have the MD40RLXT and love it! I use it as my return pump from the sump. I had a concern about using a ball valve on the output to back off the flow. Since this model is not the "pressure rated" version. So, I contacted Iwaki. They said that it would be fine to back the pump off HALF WAY!!! They said that when they they talk about the pump being "pressure rated", they are refering to its use in pumping oils, caustics and misc. other, "industrial" solvents and such. For aquarium use, its fine. Ive had it running, backed off about a quarter, for 3 years. No problems YET!!!!!!!!!!
