Hmm, I see that the unsuitable species list link is dead (in The Industry Behind the Hobby forum). Maybe Chucker can resurrect it for us.

Do you think that this should be an unsuitable species, Steve?

FWIW, even in large systems niger triggers are usually slow growers, I've never seen one even near 20".. that would be a jumbo for sure.

There are a few triggers that are 'reef safe' in a sense that they would not eat corals or crabs. You can tell by the position of their mouth (up facing).

Hi Minh That's any interesting theory but I just put a ghost shrimp in with a 4" niger and he turned sideways and nailed that sucker off the bottom in a New York minute.

Mitch, actually my question wasn't aimed at you (you had already said that you didn't know they got this big) but instead those who already knew the size they get and keep them.

Do you think that this should be an unsuitable species, Steve?

-Well for a guy with a 400 gallon tank maybe not. The problem is that 95% of the people who purchase this fish will probably have a tank under 200 gallons, and yes I would think this fish is too large for a tank this small. By keeping a fish like this we as hobbiest just contribute to the ammunition needed to ban imports of reef animals, it just dosen't look responsible.

There will be exception to every rule, especially if you have a hungry trigger. On the whole, trigger with up facing mouth tend to feed on the water colum. They learn very quick also.
