If you have one in your sump, how do you have it set up? - How far is it submerged?

I think you will find that not too many people are even using a SeaClone on their tank considering their poor performance. I'm not sure if the degree of submergence is really all that critical since this skimmer can also be used as a hang-on skimmer.

Yeah, it looks that way..

I don't know why they get such a bad rap.. It seems to be working out ok for me (so far).. It seems to make good skimmate directly proportional to the load I put on it... :?

I was curious about submergence because when it's used as a hang-on, it actually rides fairly low in the water line. Like all hang-ons, it only has to pump air/water up a few inches.

Anyway, I'm trying to get set up with my first reef and wanted to drop all the equipment I can into the sump (eventually). When I started thinking about how to do the skimmer I realized that there's more physics going on with a skimmer that I need to take into consideration. (Since I just built a new house and the old one hasn't sold yet I'm working on a limited budget otherwise I'd probably scrap it for a Euro since everyone seems to clamor on about how good they are..)

I know I can DIY customize a chamber into the sump just for the skimmer, but I was hoping someone out there might have already invented the wheel so I wouldn't have to re-invent it myself.

i know its hard to compare a seaclone to a better one if thats all you'v had but believe me there are substantially better ones on the market which dont cost tremendously much more than the seaclone......aHGRRRRR that word alone sens shivers down my spine, bung it in the local ads its crap

What would you use instead of the Seaclone that costs "not much more". :?

greatfuldiver, if you already have a seaclone skimmer you can do some simple modifications to make it better. Do a search for seaclone skimmers. not saying there the best, but you got to do what you got to do. Atleast till you can afford better. Just to guess about how far submerged, I would try various levels to see which one worked best. Just cut up some 6" pvc to different sizes with a small peice of plexiglass and go from thier. Good luck.

I bought a Kent Nautulus. I am running it with a Rio 2100 and have never been happier. It is very easy to adjust the height of the water column inside the bubble chamber, thus, adjusting the foam density.
I have a 75 gallon with a medium bio-load and I get a good, thick brownish-green foam about the consistancy of shaving cream.
It started pumping out the smelly stuff immediately. And it only took me about a day to fine tune the foam.
The only down side is that is has a large footprint when combined with my Rio and takes up half the space in my 29 gallon sump. It is VERY quiet, and comes with a foam sleeve to break the noise of the water falling back to the sump.
I got both skimmer and pump at my LFS for $155.00

Thanks smokin, found a mod worth tryin out...

29 gallon sump eh Dew?? Nice... That's about the size of my tank (no sump yet, but it'll only be about 10 once I do)....

This'll be my first reef.. If it works out fairly well I'll sweat gettin a better skimmer for the 300 I have it in mind to build in the basement.

And the little lady is watchin too.. I'll probably be helpin her out with something like a 10gal mini if it doesn't look like too much work to her.

WARNING!!!!!!! WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ("I am running it with a Rio 2100 and have never been happier"). Dewman, You will regret keeping that rio. Trust me I read on here for a year about them blowing up and putting some sort of oil in the water and killing your reef. Everyone said it was just happening to the larger rio's. FALSE. Mine was a little rio 800. I got lucky, did a big water change, and ran my mag supreme with carbon and only lost 1 shrimp and part of a coral. Just do a search. Save yourself a lot of grief and replace it NOW!!!!! THIS IS NOT A TEST, TAKE HEED NOW!!!!!!!! END OF WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8O 8O 8O

smokin,
I have read all the posts about how evil the Rio's are. But I have NEVER had any problems with them. Neither of my LFS 's have either and I have known all these guys for many years.
I have been using rios for about three years with my fresh water stuff. I think as with other products, someone gets a bad one now and again, and that is all you hear about.
I have heard more good than bad. I think for now I will keep it. I am the kind of person who replaces things regularly and keeps my equipment clean. The rio will probably give way eventually, but it wont be in my sump when it does. I will retire it to the garbage can I keep RO/DI water circulating in. That will be in the Spring.
I appreciate the concern, and I wll keep an eye on it.

I have a REAL problem with DOLPHIN pumps. I have had two bad ones in a row. In my opinion, THEY SUCK. Others swear by them. Like I said, everyone has a story, it just depends on who you ask.

Thanks again

I had a Rio 1700 blow up and it leaked oil out in my salt mixing vat.
Thank god it was not in my tank! :D
Seaclones are better off in the trash :!: :!: :!:

Dewman I could have wrote that post about 6 months ago. Oh well youve been warned. I wouldnt listen either. Know one keeps their equipment as clean as I like to, well mabe some do, and it still happened. My lfs has also used rio's for many years. That was my thought. Dude, I just don't want you to have the same experience I had. Good luck with the rio, you will need it.

Its not a matter of if it will blow, but when.

OK! OK! I give up... Iwill replace it the second week of Janurary. That is the next time I get laid. I never thought I would have problems. I think I mught just keep it going in a covered trash can and see how long it runs without problem, just for the sake of finding out myself.

Thanks smokin' , sometimes it takes getting hit over the head with a sledgehammer beforeI change my mind. I did some more research in the archives though, andf I guesthisis the best course of action.

What is it they say... An ounce of prevention-worth a pound of cure...

Hi Garry, sorry for the delay... - The cheapest I've been able to find a multi for is about $170 US (~ 163 EU) and it's questionable as to whether that comes with a pump or not. That's a little over twice what I paid for the seaclone ($80).

And I AM looking for a replacement now too. After making soup this weekend (adding southdown) the clone about choked and died. After tearing it apart and scrubbing it down it looks like it might still "work" but after seeing some of the pics of other peoples collection cups, I realize my skimmate isn't as thick and dark as it probably should be.

Since I'll probably have to replace my mistake, I'm thinking of getting just a Berlin classic for the 30 I'm trying to get going now and then saving up for a Euro CS8-3 for the big tank I'm planning.

Can I fish for peoples opinions on the Berlin Classic? (And what pump I should use with it since Rio's are getting a right bashing lately...)

Hey Diver, did you buy Southdown in MI, or in Toledo? or where. I know you are kinda close to the line there...

Yeah, close to the line is right! - I'm about a mile north of the Indiana border and about half an hour from the Ohio border..

I got mine from a shop in Kalamazoo, MI.. Called (appropriately enough) The Reef Shop. I don't know how much more they have, but I know they had at least one bag left when I walked out. (Though I thought about snatching it up!)

From what I saw after adding it in, it didn't look/feel to be a whole lot different than the Aragamax "Grand Bahamas" mix that I already had in there. - It was just a LOT more reasonable on price without any coarser stuff in it.

My kids (oldest daughters name is Coral) live in K-zoo, so I'm always going back and forth there. If you (or anyone else I guess) needs some and it works out easier for me to have it ready it's no problem.. (For those doing any long-distance east/west drives, I'm only a mile north of the I-80 toll road with an easy exit.)

I actually thought about grabbing on to some to keep some weight in the trunk for the winter.. (Sorry for those of you who can't get any...)
