I have a JBJ 12DX that I am going to be setting up with a sump and refugium. I want to have a skimmer on it that I can run on a timer from time to time but I don't really know what kind to get. I have a SeaClone that I bought years ago, but I know how worthless it is un-modified. I might also consider getting a new skimmer if I can find one that is very short so that I can fit it into the stand that I have for it. I'm talking real short, like less than 20". I know that there is the Fission Nano Skimmer, but how well does it work. My bro has one on his reef and he said that he likes it, but I just think that he might not know any better. Does anyone have a link to the seaclone mods, or have any advice on a new skimmer that I should look into or should consider. Thanks

I used the SeaClone back in the day on a Q tank. It seemed to work so-so for me. I heard that with some mods, ie air stone, it works pretty well. I am sure that there are a lot of other mods that can be done to it to get it to work even better but I can't remember the thread on RC. I'll keep trying to search, maybe that will turn something up. I am still looking for some advice on a Nano skimmer, or just a real small skimmer, that I might be able to use instead. Thanks

There was like 3 nano skimmer posts this past month i think =0) Sapphire skimmers are the best and make one to fit specifically for each of the JBJ's and the aquas. Look them up and search the forums. bucha info about them and what other poeple are skimming with. There are a few users here that are using them also.

I've heard the same on the fission...

I bought one of the Sapphire's for my jbj24, verdict isn't out yet as I've had it only a week. When i posted about it last week other users seemed to like the results they had when using one. Will let you know.

agree nano-reef is a good forum and for general upgrades/add-ons for the nanos i'd suggest www.nanotuners.com their customer service guys are great to speak to as well if you have add'l questions on the units.

Good Luck

There are a few skimmers that are really short but still decent. I ended up with a Deltec MCE600 on my 2.5g nano's but Tunze DOC is pretty compact as well. Both would fit in a 20" space as would the Sapphires but the above two skimmers are much more powerful than the nano type skimmers.

I have looking around and I have been hearing some good things about the modded seaclone. I know that it would be a lot easier to just buy a new better skimmer, but I think I am going to work with what I have, I'm going to do the mesh mod of sorts to the MJ900 supplied. I think that I am just going to sew some fishing line on it. I am going to get a new air valve, make sure the collection cup makes a real good seal, and I might cut the center riser tube down a little, jury is still out on that one. After I get that all taken care of, it should work great on my little 12gal.

i think your best bets are the sapphire skimmer, or aqua c remora (regular or nano versions), plus tunze makes a nano skimmer too i think. having said all this i agree with bad coffee. for nanos, the best thing u can do is small frequent water changes.
