I included a picture of my sump and my problem is that the water flowing over the last wall hits the chamber my pumps in and that creates bubbles that my return pump immediatly returns to the main tank. Because of the size of the chamber i cannot move the pump further away from where the water enters. This would solve the problem, but its not an option. anyone have any good ideas?

Seems that the distance that the water falls down to the pumps sections is likely causing the bubbles. Any way to cut that baffle down and lower the water level in your sump? Adding another couple of baffles could help too.

Look at the design of a lifereef or other similar sump and try to copy that.

This is how I reduced the bubbles from my sump. The water flowing from the reef was going into my skimmer and into the sump. I used a 4" diameter plastic pipe with holes drilled at the botton. The water from the skimmer flowed into the plastic pipe most of the bubbles would float to the top in the pipe the water coming from the bottom had few bubbles .
With your setup if you had another baffle right before the pump with the water flowing under rather than over the baffle, that might work

i agree with the addt'l baffles. try a couple of cheap tank dividers. that's what i use in my sump. dividers are cheap, effective, and easily installed aftersetup. let it go the entire height of the tank (15H?) and it should cut down tremendously on the bubbles. you can also get multiple dividers to create zones as well. (i.e. macroalgae, cryptic, quarantine or 'timeout' :P )

i'd put one right at the inflow into the tank, another mid-way thru, and another right before the pump like louey suggests. maybe one more right before your glass baffle. hth

actually there are 2 dividers there. They are just hard to see in that pic. First the water from the tank flows under a baffle then over another one. this is where my pump is in, and the pump fits in there snuggly. Thats why there are bubbles, because the water pretty much falls right onto the pump. what should i do!!!! help!!!

could you add an acrylic shed or lean-to over the pump. force the water to make one or two 'turns' before hitting the intake. that should give the bubbles time to rise upward. kinda like the prizm skimmer's reaction chamber. www.redseafish.com

laying on one or two of those divider sheets (perforate it more if necessary) right over the pump (stood off a little tho) will also lower the bubbling.

actually, I just did this and it seemed to knock off about 75 percent of the bubbles. It still has a lot of bubbles, but looks better. What exactly do you mean rcsheng? thanks!

How about swapping ends? Not sure how much work it would be and it would give you the ability to add more dividers if they prove necessary. It would also solve the water flowing down on top of your pump.

yes thats how it used to be....but the reason i had to switch it to make it like how it is now is so that a euroreef cs6-1 will fit in the chamber on the left.

Go to the LFS and ask for a micron sock. Add a "T" to the end of drain pipe and tie the sock just above it and your done. PM me for pics for more details.

actaully i did goto the LFS and the guy i know there told me what works best is to get some of the aquaclear 500 foam and lie it right above my pump, where the water crashes and it will filter the bubbles out without collecting too much detrious.

Tony,

you could try the sock but it looks as if the bubbles are being created right beofer the pump not the overflow drain. try some aqua clear sponge or if u plumbed a 90 degree in your pump inlet place a CPR overflow sponge on the 90 to help pull the bubbles out......

hth

u could also do the previous and reduce the hieght of the baffle or place a sponge or DLS pad in the baffle.....

You mentioned the euroreef skimmer. It only requires 6-8" sump level to operate optimally. Why is your water level so high?...Maybe i missed something, is this a test run or something?...Are you allowing for a backflow from the main tank?..Looks like that will certainly overflow...

I always use a short baffle at the last partition. Just enough to force the water to the surface. I use a 90 elbow facing down on my pump.

The sponge will help break the fall. Just have to keep cleaning it though.

Keep in mind too that the smaller the sump, the harder it is to get rid of the bubbles. If you have alot of flow, it doesn't allow enough time for them to dissipate. HTH

Just use a sponge at the bottom of the baffle prior to the pump suction, easy!

Unfortunately you have to take the sump offline. Just drain the water into buckets and save it. Take the partition out and cut it. Resilicone it. If you have enough space to get a drill in there, you can also drill some holes, pending it's plexiglass.

So lower your first partition, lower your last partition, and if you need to, you can still use the sponge. Better safe than sorry. HTH

Man, where do you find those dividers? The only ones I found at PetSmart are too small, have lots of holes in them and use stainless-steel clips...

Thanks,
Mihai
