how detectable is red light to creatures? if i ran constantly at night would this be harmfull? the reason i ask is b/c i have a couple of crabs (unknown species) (no jokes  )that i would like to remove. and they have learned that a flashlight means hide. i was thinking of using a 40 watt incandecent.

I know sharks and octopods can't see certain red wavelengths visible to us... I don't know about crabs. Try a piece of red cellophane over a flashlight. BTW how do you plan on catching them even if you see them?? Are they slow?

Not sure about red light, but I've had similiar problems. I used a maglite with a red lense, some fine point tweezers (used as spear to get crab out of hole), fine netting (mono) and some bait. I put the bait inside a ball of mesh netting, near the last known location of crab. Wait several hours (mine usually came out 2-3 hours after lights out), check mesh quickly with light. Know the exact location of mesh, don't scan whole tank with light, the crabs seem to detect some of the red light (shadow maybe?). If crab flees to hole, use tweezers to capture. It took me a week, once I started using this method (2 months of trying other ways 1st). Good luck.
The crabs in my tank moved really fast, but not far. Usually they just went around a corner, to a crevice. After all was said and done, I figured out that if you placed a rock near the trap, they'd run to the crevice under the rock if you spooked them.

nice advice O Pi Ing :

"How about buying/DIYing crab trap to catch them instead?"

Ever bought a aquarium crab trap, let alone ever found a 2" crab trap? We're not talking mantis shrimp, so mantis traps won't work. Fish traps available to hobby don't seem to work either.

I had an emerald crab that got too big for his own good, so I had to remove him. I put a glass vase in my tank with some food in the bottom and placed it right next to a rock. Within about 10 minutes the crab climbed right in and couldn't get out! It works really well.

the ones ive had in my tank were extremly slow, and i could just remove them with my hands. this one however doesnt stray far from his hole, and when i turn on the flashlight he goes right in. i was thinking of just leaving the red light on for about an hour or 2 after dark so he would get used to it and stay out so i could see him to get him out. i will try the red film over my flashlight and bait first though.

thanx
