HELP!! Came home to sliming tank, what the heck is going on!

I don't know what's going on in my tank. Everthing is sliming big time. Though everything looks ok.

I have no idea what has caused this event or what to do about it. I did add a small 1 1/2" Atlantic Blue Tang last night, but I don't really see how that could be the problem. My first suspect was the tank temp, but the temp is fine at 80. The Kalkwater make-up bucket is empty, but the level in the sump appears OK, so I don't believe there was a kalk accident.

I have 3 cylinder sleeves from Lifereef that came with filled. One with carbon, one with phospate remove, and one with nitrate remover. I'll hook them up as quickly as possible. I'll get my 32 G brute hooked up to the RO so that I can do a WC tommorow. I'll see if I can find a poly filter too.

What do you guy's think caused this and what more can I do?

Wait a minute. My Elegence coral as started to slide a bit lately. He did eat some frozen formula one last night, so I took that to mean he still has a chance. All other corals look perfect, except covered in this slime.

The pics really do not do any justice to the amount of slime in the tank.

Dang it, and I just ordered a new clam today from East coast clams. I gotta fix this ASAP.

Any ideas?

Run a bag of carbon and do a big water change this weekend! Might be something in the water!

do a 40% waterchange,increase current, clean all sponges,fresh carbon, and polyfilter(should do the trick)

fwiw-that 'slime' looks alot like what lps's 'shed(their mucous) occasionally

I'll take the MJ 1200's off the timer strip and run them constantly and I'll add another PH or two in there if I can find them.

Only temp and ph. 80 and 8.5 respectively.

It's been so long since I tested for nitrate or phosphate that I don't even know if I still have a test kit. But then agian, when you test 100 times and get zero reading, it becomes moot. I only test for cal and alk now. I did start adding vinegar in my kalkwater a couple of weeks ago in an attempt to get the cal over 400ppm. It's been stuck at 390 no matter how may tsp of kalk I added per gallon of RO/DI. I doubt the vinegar has anything to do with this. Maybe lowered the ph a tad of the two week period.

What specifically shoud I test for Dan?

Now, back to the PH thing... I think I'll blow everthing off a bit.

IF that stuff is from the lps's(elegance,open brain,etc)it's usually caused by some type of irritation-sediment/silt on the coral, or chemistry whack.

i'd do the water change asap-just in case-but if everything looks cool, then tomorrow should be ok-tonite would be better, though

Well My clownfish did take up house in my tounge coral. It's been that way for a year without any problems. I did notice that the tounge looked especially plump tonight. The clownfish could be irritating it? It sure looks happy right now though. Hell it always looks great except at night when the tenecles retract. It the clown irritates it, it would prolly be at night when it's not much more than a bumpy skeleton.

I dunno, just guessing at what might have stressed something.

I wonder if the formula one the elegance ate last night gave it diahrea? I have not intentionally fed that thing in over a year? I thought feeding would be a good idea because it hasn't looked to good since the move. Maybe too much of a good thing, eh? I've had it for almost two years, so it will be sad if it doesn't make it.

I can't do a water change til tomorrow since I dont have any RO available.

Here is a couple of pics of the clown in his host tounge coral. I noticed there is quite a bit of silt stirred up around the tounge that I don't recall seeing before. Maybe the new tang and the clown got into to it a bit, cause the clown to guard (rub) his host more than normal?

It's a posibility?

The new tang is a beautiful lil bugger. I'll post pics after I fatten him up a bit.

I would darn sure be testing my nitrite, nitrate, and esp. ammonia just to satisfy my own curiosity. Major sliming=major unhappy corals IMO.

Is it possible that the clown stirred up the sustrate and all the slime is from some Turbulid (??) snails???? These are the small, calcerous, coiled tubes with two small "feelers" sticking out the top. They secrete a mucus net to capture food.

Well, the tank looks pretty clear this morning. MY RO didn't put-out very much water overnight (different thread) so I'm off to Walmart to get a new bcycle pump so I can add air into the storage tank. Then I'll do a AC latter today.

Of course it will be interesting to see how it looks when the lights come on!
