I purchased green star polyps from LFS Sunday. They have yet to open. All the polys on the entire piece are closed. I have a 120 gallon. I have 2 175 Watt MH pendants with actinics. The piece was orginally 1/2 way down. Now I moved it a little lower and in partial shade. Parameters as follows
S.G. 1.024
Temp 78
Nitrate 2
Nitrite and Ammonia 0
pH 8.1

Brain coral shrooms and button polys all open and expanded yellow tang and tomato clown are fine.

Star polyps are always a bit sketchy when acclimating to a tank. What kind of lighting and how close to the lamps was the piece at the shop? It should open up in a few days or so, just make sure that algae doesn't begin to grow over it and you should be all set. I'd move it lower in the tank, probably to the bottom. HTH

I agree. Sometimes they take a long time to open, and once acclimated they will open quickly. When I frag them, peeling away some of the purple mat, they get mad and won't open for days.

If you saw them open in the LFS, then they are probably fine and will open soon. They are even more intimidated by your lighting, which I am sure is brighter than what the LFS had. You are right to move them to a lower light area, I think they will open this weekend in such a spot. Later they will probably take the light just fine.

It can be common for star polyps to react that way sometimes. As long as the closed up mat retains it's color and doesn't receed or disintegrate it's fine. They should open in time.
