We have been having problems with our 240gal FO tank running to warm. The temp. has been staying at 83-84 deg. consistantly. The room temp. is about 75 deg. We run three 140 watt, VHO with two 7" cooling fans on top. (tank is fully inclosed acrylic) Inside there are 4 maxijet 1200's for circulation. Below there is a Euro-reef skimmer, and 2 GEN-X pumps. I am suspecting the GEN-X pumps to be the problem.(we also have a 125gal. reef, with tons of equipment, including 2-400watt MH. No heating problem. Return is a CEDRA.) Does anyone have experience with them? Do they have a history of heating? We are thinking about buying a chiller, but first thought I would look for other options. I am told DOLPHIN pumps run cool, but know nothing about them. Any ideas? Thanks for any input.

Acrylic tanks does a very good job of keeping the heat in. IMHO, even if you suspect the pumps is the culprit, get a chiller anyway. Chiller is crucial for the tanks that size. There are too much invested to skimp over the cost of a chiller.

Actually, I own a CSL at home, and a Aqualogic 1/3 HP at office. I believe cyclone is the flow thru model. I have the drop in model (I forgot what's it called now). I have no complaints with them but there was a prior thread about a guy that had problem with the aqualogic. The guy claimed that aqualogic originally promised to reimburse him on the loses, but later chickened out on it. Of course, Aqualogic denied ever made promises such as what he was referring to.

Let me see if I can find that thread.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I ordered one before I read this. I will contact Marine Depot tomorrow, before they ship it and get a little more insight. Possibly change the order. Thanks again.

Go check out www.fritzpet.com they have some great info on choosing a chiller. They have a list of things to consider when choosing the right size model. For example, live rock insulates heat, so the more rock you have the harder it is to chill. Plexiglass insulates better than glass. Etc.

They were also very helpful on the phone, they dont sell direct to consumers, but will answer questions and direct you to a dealer who carries their chillers.

Pretty good info for any brand or model of chiller...
