The theory goes that fish doesn't see the red spectrum as much as the rest of the light spectrum. Their eyes are adapted to see mostly blues that penetrate deep into the ocean. So at night if you don’t want to disturb your fishes and take a peak at what is going on you flip on the red lights.

Yes, Blue is used to simulate moonlight. Red is used for viewing because Red light is supposedly not in the visable spectrum for most fish and inverts so they dont notice you pointing the light at them...

I installed a couple of red truck/trailer running lights attached to a 12 volt wall/wart type transformer. Works pretty good and keeps 110 volts away from my water. They are the little plastic ones that run along the tops of trailers. Jim
