HI,
Ive had my reef tank up and running since July (29g with 20g sump). I woke up one morning to find all the fish dead except the mandarin. Did all my tests and everything was great (well alk was a bit lower at 7), temp fine...i couldnt figure it out...then 2 days later all my corals have closed and shriveled.
I cant uderstand whats happened? All the inverts are fine...hermits, muithrax, snail, abalone, and even one fish.

I dont even know if theres anything anyone can tell me about it...this has upset the whole family here

Could be a lot of things.

Maybe a batch of bad food. Did you have a pest control company spray for bugs? Did you use a chemical near the tank? (I heard of someone who lost fish by using Pine Sol on the wall near the tank). Did you use any kind of chemical while you were away from the tank and then not wash up before putting your hands in the tank?

These are just a couple of things. I'm sure you will get a lot more questions than answers from the various people who respond to this email.

So some large water changes and hope the rest of the livestock recovers :(

Good luck

The fact that everything died except the MANDARIN is suprising. My guess would be a food problem, since mandarins have a tendancy not to eat anything you put in the tank. The coral problem could be caused by the quick addition of ammonia from all the dead fish.

Make sure your test kits are up to date. maybe you are missing something

Just a thought

Thats the only thing I can think of too since madarins dont eat normal food that everything else does. Do some a good water change to help get rid of ammonia and any chemical in the water. That reminds me, got to inform the pest people not to spray around the tank.
