Over the last few days, i noticed that my polyp has been shriveling a bit on one side. All of his tenticles type things are missing a small portion of one side. what could be causing this? I have had him for about a week and he has been open every day except yesterday and today where he looks a bit shriveled. Water paramaters should all e fine, i just checked them not too long a ago and did a 20 gallon water change a few days ago.

My ricordea go thru a fair amount of variation in shape day to day, this is more than that? Hmmm...did you check specific gravity? Some shrooms are sensitive to high salinities, and that could have changed from the water change.

i did up the salinity through the water change by maybe .001 because the sg is now 1.023 where it was 1.022.

Sorry, its just me and I'm not sure...

Do you have other polyps and stuff in the tank? Do they look ok?
Could it be dividing?

If everything is good in your tank(parameters), sometime all you can do is watch and wait...

well this is my only polyp in the tank. I dont no if its dividing, kinda doubt it...he looks more like hes dying then splitting. Im not sure whats irratating him though.

Does it look like something could be eating it? I was just reading an old post on one of the boards about a 6 ft worm in a guys tank that was eating polyps and shrooms. He had to tear apart all his rockwork to get the worm out. He turned on the lights late one night and saw the worm munching on a blue shroom.
Sleep tight.

you know now that you mention it, the other night i did see a fairly large bristle worm hanging out underneath one of my rock overhangs. I flashed the flashlight on him to get a better look and he instantly shot off and vanished. It was freaky! Ill have to watch at night and see if he is eatin it. Cause thats what it looks like, the polyps tentacles are missing or shaved down.

If it actually looks eaten keep an eye on your shrimp and make sure they are getting enough to eat. I've had them eat zooanthids...

well i just started hand feeding them shrimp (ironically). So if they were munching on it, hopefully they stopped now because i have been giving them food. I was worried about them becuase i have 3 large pepermints and 1 skunk cleaner in my tank. i always try and feed my fish alot so that they get a lot of extra food.

how big have your pepermints gotten? Im gonna have to get one or two of them pretty soon since I have an aptasia outbreak starting.
The worm in the thread I was reading wasn't a bristle worm. It was some wierd looking black worm. Of course if the worms in your tank can't find enough to eat I'm sure they'd go for something a bit more exotic to eat.

fwiw:
adding extra food to sate worm populations is not a great idea-you'll just end up w/some very hungry worms when you stop the excess feeding -let the worm population become self limiting according to the regular amounts of food the tank needs-their reproduction, and growth, should more or less match the food available in the system-they are scavengers-treat them as such

pods should not be eating healthy tissue

is there any other coral, or anemone near the shroom?

and have you done a thorough water test?

fist off, i said i added extra food for the shrimps. they always eat it and are hungry. second this is the only coral/anemone in my tank at the time. and yes, the water params are all quite healthy! thanks

sorry for the misunderstanding

fwiw:if you want to look at your tank at nite, w/out spooking anything-use a red lens on a flashlight

the critters can't see red light
