phyto effect on test kits?

Does phyto have an effect on the readings of certain test kits? For 4 months my tank was very stable. I started dosing phyto last week, every other day per instructions, and now I find traces of ammonia, and alk and calcium are both off the scale (high). I find it hard to believe though, because there has been no visible changes in any of the animals.

Never mind...

I did some research on the notoriously inaccurate (as I found out) test kits I have . Will have to quit being so damn cheap and order some decent ones (salifert, yes?) tomorrow.
