Yes, there is red bubble algae, it is not really related to valonia, and it does not typically become a nuisance.

Her tail is healing but she still has to wear that stupid tube taped on the end, If I take it off before she is completely healed she will just bust it open again. She seems to have totally forgotten that it is on there though.

How are the macros doing? Did that spagetti algae start growing yet? That's awesome stuff.

Do you see the air bubbles escaping from the "red algae" up to the surface of the water? Does it seem that the bubbles get worse as the day progresses and then they seem to diminish when the lights are off? If so, what you're looking at is cyanobacteria, or red slime algae. If that's the case start doing water changes, get more flow on the spots where it seems to be at it's worst, and when you syphon the tank try to get as much as possible of the stuff out. Don't worry about loosing sand, it can be replaced, just do what you can to get the stuff out of your system. And don't feed your tank as much, the stuff thrives on nutrients.

Sure do! I will start making some frags tonight and getting them growing on little rocks for you. I will make a selection and you can come over and buy what you like.

I would have responded by email but I just tried to go to hotmail and was getting an error message, hopefully it will work soon.

Coral, those didn't come from me, did it? I don't think so, because these red algae never grow right in my tank. By the way, the tank is really green! What happened?

Dude. when you said "red bubble algae' i was thinking of something similar to what coralshrimp posted. There is actually a type of algea that looks very similar to what she posted, but doesn't grow upwards like that, which is what I thought you meant.

It sounds more like what you have is cyano, if it actually looks like air bubbles covered with red algae.

Where do you get your water? I gotta say the tap water around this area is not good at all, so you really need to buy water from the fish store, or have a RO/DI unit.

I just have an RO unit and I get some cyano from time to time.

I would scoop out what you can, also. I think this is a new set up tank right?? When you get that refugium you have really kicking it will help with your water quality, so perhaps this is a temporary thing. Just make sure you harvest the macro as it grows. so you are actually exporting nutrients.

i have the typhoon 5 stage unit. before that i used to get water from sea of marvels. The refugium has been running for some time now, maybe 2-3 weeks. What should i do with the algae, i havent exported it yet? Someday your just gonna have to come over here so you can take a look at my tank and tell what i need to do with it. I just ordered 60 lbs of rock from gulf-view which will be here on tuesday so im really excited!

When the macro algae in your refugium doubles in size, take out a third of it and throw it away. Keep it pruned back enough that is has room to flourish. There is this guy I know in Cedar Rapids that has some kind of phobia about pruning back his macros, everytime I looked at his refugium it was choking itself out it was so full of caulerpa. You can either throw it in the trash (makes your trash stinky), compost it (what I do but I think you live in a apartment so I doubt you can do that) or flush it down the toilet.

I think near the coast people say you shouldn't flush it for fear of having it get into the sea, but I don't think we have that worry where we live, so flush away.

I can probably come over sometime soon, I will make those frags for you and give you a call when they are ready, I ended up being more busy this weekend than I had planned.

I think your red slime algae problem should clear up soon, with all the good changes you are making, the new RO unit and the refugium.

You will like the Gulf View rock, that is the kind of rock I got recently, some neat critters came out of it. I did find a mantis, the one I have in the 5 gallon in my living room. He wasn't really hard to remove though, I just saw which rock he was in and took it out and now he is my little pet.

in regards to the algae you are trying to id, a good way to see if its cyno is to point a powerhead at it or wave your hand at it to get some good bursts of waterflow at it. if it flys away like spiderwebby type stuff its cyno.
