I have algae, some brown, some red/pink growing in spots on the surface of my sand. I have had die off on my turbos and hermits so there are only a few and I know I need to get some more, but, is there anything other than lack of cleanup crew that is causing this. I have no readable nitrates or phos. I just started using a new RO/DI about 1 month ago. I have done about 75g worth of water change on a 75G tank and about 40G of sump. There could be some silicates or other nutrient in there from prior to the new RO/DI. I also have a new PM bullet 2 skimmer which is making kick ass amounts of gunk.

Any thoughts on this algae???

Astrea amd turbos are unable to handle the brown algae and they will die. usually within hours. U need to remove them before they decay and contribute to the bloom.

My experience is I do not do any water changes until the Brown Algae bloom subsides. IME it was only 4-5days...... Then do a siphon wter change (siphon the rocks and stuff and pull out all the dead matter) so that you do not feed another bloom.

is this tank cycling?

the red and pink spots, are they in the sand bed (you can see them between glass and the bed, or on the surface of the sand?

if they are within the bed. no worries. If it is red algae on top of the sand. it is probably cyano.... you probably have alot of nutients avail in the water. how much fow do you have, what is you skimmer rated for?

what is you PH, ALK - KH ?

You want your PH at 8.2-.3 and you alk between 10-12. NSW is 8 dKH but the Cyanobacteria have probalmes living in the highr readings. They key with your PH is consistancy

This 75G tank is about 2 yrs old, so it is not cycling. I have a Precision Marine Bullet @ skimmer which is rated for like 200G, so its plenty for my tank. The algae is on top of the sand and I dont have any turbo's decaying in the tank. I have an arrow crab, which I think has eaten some snails and hermits. There are 5 fish and a bunch of corals. All are doing well including some SPS frags and leather I fragged to about 6 pieces. My PH is 8.2 and my DKH is 9.5. There ar no redings of NO3 or PO4. I dont overfeed(or at least dont think so) but I really hate this unwanted algae....
