I apologize for the 'oddity' of this question in advance.
I don't know any carpenters to ask.

I have a wooden canopy over my aquarium this is only about
1/4" shy of being able to fit the desired light I have purchased.

The canopy is 3/4" thick and all I need to do is take 1/4 or 1/8th off, trimmed on the inside, for the light to fit. I tried using a sander today
but, quickly realized it will take a LONG time for this effort.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Assuming that it is made of plywood, I'm sure you could take off one or two plys with a wood chisel and a hammer. It's a hack job, but then again anything you do will be a hack job. But who cares, it's inside the canopy, right?

You do now.....

But Louey answered it just fine. Sand it after you have chiseled it though. It won't look so bad after.

If your sander is a Beltsander, go get a 36 grit belt, or the lowest you can find. It will eat throught the wood in no time.

A palm sander would take all day.

if I understand you correctly you need to shave off about 1/4" off the top so that light would fit - I would not do it if I were you unless you're using 40W lights, if you're using power compacts or anything else, it will get too hot for the wood and it will burn it, although wood catches on fire supp at 400+ degrees, if you put power compacts you would be cutting it close.

This happened to me with a power compact and a mica canopy top - the entire underneath literally melted, the wood warped and when I put a thermometer it read over 310+

I would go with a router also, but and it is a big but

You need to do some research on how close the ply can be to the light as they do get hot.

ps, you could always build a new hood whybuyjusdiy
