has anyone had any experience with the SouthBay skimmers sold by Jeff.
I was wondering if they are as good as the Euro-reef as they claim

Same exact skimmers but Jeff doesn't use the needle wheels. I have seen a few in action without the needle wheels and they work just as good as my Euro-reef.

Yup, I've got the "6-1" one running on my 120g. I'm happy with it...it's really as easy as everyone says, and does an excellent job.

It's hard to tell the difference between the Euro-reef and the Southbay (at least for me it is). The Southbays use the same pump, same impeller, and same overall design. I think the materials they use in the Southbay are comparable to the Euro-reefs (though my Southbay came with some cool smoke acrylic for the neck of the skimmer to impede algae growth).

I'd definitely recommend them...I actually went to buy a Euro-reef, but they were out of stock at the time (actually, everyone seemed to be out of stock at the time) and Jeff's suggested the Southbay.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

For a short time Jeff used the same impellers as Euro-reef. Last July\August Euro-reef cut Jeff off from buying the Needle wheels and the Venturi intakes. Jeff has always said that the standard Sedra impellers work as good or better then the Needle wheels\ER impellers. During those months Jeff had his own mold made of the Venturi intake and started producing his own intakes around late Sept\Oct last year. As far as I know he is NOT using the Needle wheels\Impellers that ER uses.

Is anyone else using a SouthBay skimmer? Has anyone compared performance between a SouthBay skimmer and its EuroReef equivalent (besides Jeff at Jeff's Exotic)?

I am also considering a SouthBay or EuroReef skimmer. Probably an 8-2 for my 120 reef.

Thanks,

Jim
