Hello out there in reef world

Does anyone have experience with detritivore or recharge kits? I need to seed my Deep sand bed and can not borrow sand from anyone as i can't find anyone around me who has an established sand bed. Are these kits worth the hundred bucks?

Thanks for any input

Thanks for the response and the welcome.

Are the kits actually worth the money or should I just rely on the live rock that I will be purchasing to seed the Deep sand bed. This is my first tank with a DSB and live rock. I am converting it from a established fish only tank and unfortunately I had to get rid of all the rocks and shells that were in that one. I specifically need to have a large amount of amiphods and cocophods sp? because we would like to keep a mandarin dragonette.

Once again thanks for any input.

the kits will speed up the process considerably. so if it is worth your time than the kits are worth it. i dont use them but i have an established dsb i pulled some material from so i basically did the kit but from my reef tank and not from a store. i would be glad to send you some live sand for say half the cost of the kit if you like.

Hi knucklehead! I'm glad you decided to come here (I was the one who responded to your query at wetwebmedia). As you can see, we have more than a few folks who have ideas for you. Maybe you'll visit here as well as wetweb, yeah?

We love spreading the word!

danm, very good catch. He is actually considering making his purchase from Inland. I kicked him here since both MattM and Tom O are here, as well as many folks who are quite familiar with these kits (I've never used anything like it--just material swiped from an established system).

I can only speak to what he wrote us at the wetwebmedia crew. It's not up to me to question how he intends to acquire his stuff. I suggested he come here because of the larger sample base.

knucklehead, in case you hadn't sorted it, I'm seamaiden here and Sea Maiden in the wetweb forums.

Will offered you a cup of starter (reminds me of bread....yum), so that is indeed another route. But I don't want to take business away from Inland, either.

Hello to all

I Have pretty much decided to go with 44 lbs of live rock as well as a detritivore kit. The tank is now set up after a horrible two weeks of muxing around to get a sump. Since I have a 55 gal corner bow tank I built the stand out of marine ply, fir, and the outside is varnished mahogany. It is sweet looking. There is only one small problem. There is not enough room for a sump in there. Believe me! I have shoehorned a 20 gal high under there with an Aqua C Remora Pro and a magnum 350 canister filter. I used an Iwaki md30 rxlt pump for the return, but had to make a platform in the basement hanging from the floor joists as it put too much heat into that cabinet. Tonight I finished taking care of my microbubble problem so tomorrow I will order some live rock.

I am pretty sure that seamaiden told me in another post how to direct the return from the Iwaki. I came up with something slightly different. Since it is a corner tank I put PVC going down the back corner to a three way elbow. That split the flow into two streams along each back wall. That is a pretty rare fitting. You have to search online for them. I think they are used for making pvc furniture.

Well, I think that after the live rock cycles I will add the detritivore kit and then wait a couple of months before we add the first fish (Carpenter's flasher wrasse)

Well thanks to all for the pointers
