ok heres the ideathat just popped into my head for my new 75 .... what if instead of using a standard overflow using my existing penguin 300 for the overflow type box, only run it medialess and put a grommet on the side of it to run to the fuge... this way you have a powered overflow that you dont have to worry about the siphone breaking.... the power goes off it doesnt matter becasue the pump will start back up and theres not very much that will drain into the sump in a power loss either.... ok second part of idea... instead of buying a mag type pump, could i use my current magnum 350 cannister filter and stick the inlet in the sump and the outlet in the tank??? this seems way simpler and more failsafe to me... considering the cannister is going to stop doing anything in the event of power failure and there wont be any siphoning ... and the overflow (penguin) would only drain to the grommet, which you could easily accomadate for by allowing the room in the fuge for this.. only thing is youd need the overflow to drain faster than the cannister, put a valve on it to adjust the flow rate so it matched the cannister... what do you guy think of this??? it simplifies the plumbing and seems fairly fail safe..

it would work but you have to match the flows exactly if youre off 1 gal a min it will back up and you will end up with a puddle on the floor. i have never had a problem losing a syphon on my overflow boxes on any of my tanks even in a power outage. i would suggest this instead. you could use the magnum as a return as long as you cleaned it regularly as you probably allready know once it gets cloged it will start to slow down.
