Ok so I go into Encinitas tropical fish. Located in Encinitas, California USA. I ask the guy if he has any fighting conchs. Well he repsonds with this story:

" We don't sell fighting conchs. Why would you want one. You know they are called fighting conchs because they shoot dangerous poison darts out of thier snouts. They do this to kill fish. They are very predatory. One time this guy was collecting them on the beach and he had a handfull of them. He got hit by one of the darts and he fell over and died right there on the spot!".

This was verbatim. I do love Encinitas tropical fish for thier excellent livestock of corals. Please for the love of sanity do not ask them any questions about ANYTHING.

Attached is a diagram I made of the supposed FIGHTING CONCH:

Lol, I think he's thinking of cone snails which can be deadly to fish and man (some species). Never heard of a conch doing anything more harmful than getting stuck in a drainpipe.

Comedy gold from your LFS!

um, excuse me investigator1, if you take a closer look at your pic you will realize that you have mistaken the Conch's penis for a dart gun. Maybe dart's aren't really the weapon of choice for the Conch afterall.

Silly, that is what they use for their dart guns...

"This is my weapon this is my gun...this is for killing and this is for fun"

No No

"Textile cones" are used to make towels.

Fighting Conchs...are made to fight!

It must be that way...see the names

Most fish retailers know either:

1) Nothing at all or are a total waste of oxygen (10%)
2) Just enough to be dangerous (35%)
3) Enough to do well but don't ask them any advanced questions and ignore their "elitist" attitude because they think they know more than they do (40%)
4) Are very very knowledgible, helpful, conscientious, and courteous (15%).

Where I live there are two LFS. One of them falls into category 3 for all their help, and the other one has one employee in category 1. Two employees in category 2. Two employees in category 3. One employee in category 4 but is lacking the conscientious issues.

To sum up, I no longer ask questions of ANY OF THEM, I simply grab the closet one and point to what I wish to purchase, and try my best to ignore every thing else about them.

Its pretty much the same for me with Guns and Computers also.

Unfortunatley for me, I have to put up with salesmens bulls##t when it comes to cars because I dont really know jack about modern cars. Im going to start reading up in the future and change that also.
