I own a Reef Devil that is about 3 years old, The Mag 7 I have powering it is becoming loud and possibly slowing down. Any recomendations? GPH? I have been eyeing up the "Quiet one"

Looking for feedback before I make this purchase. Would the quiet one have too much current? it is rated at 1060GPH at 0 Head.

Thanks

Davey,

FWIW, I'm using a Sen900g on my ETS Evolution 500. I Don't know how that skimmer model compares to your Reef Devil.

The Sen900g is a bit much for my ETS, so I had to throttle it down some with a gate valve. Works great though and I haven't had the problems others have noted with the Sen.

Hope some others can offer help or expand on this.

Take care,
Hal

I am sure it is a reef devil, however it is different than the current model. The black box is about 10 x 5 x 6 inches and the reaction chamber has about a 4 inch diameter and is aprox 8 inches in height. The overflow cup has 4 white screws to hold it in place with a O ring to keep the seal. The Air and water injector is about 18inches tall, unfortunaltey there is no name on it, just the ETSS labell on the front and a patent number.

Seems like we need some other input here Davey.

Your ETS model does seem a little smaller than mine. If that's the case, my Sen900 would probably be way too much power. Mine ETS skimmer is about 5 years old.

Hope someone else chimes in here.

Good luck,
Hal

Pretty much it, Same design probably thatone is just newer. It says 750? but I am wonderin if I should run a Mag9 or the quiet one? the bulk valve that is releasing the flow out of the skimmer is about 1/2 closed?

http://www.superskimmer.com/etss_800.htm

you need at least 500 gph (max750gph) 9.5 @4ft its 800gph for the 600 if you use a 9.5 you will need to throttle it back because it might have to much presure they recommend 600gph

now one the 800 it needs at least 500gph max (1000gph) the 9.5 will work nice they recommend 800gph

What is skimmer efficiency?
Skimmer efficiency is the measure of how much water is processed and the amount of pump power required to do it. You will need to know the pump manufacturers rating at 4 ft of head for the pump you are using and the skimmers discharge rate in GPH. All pumps must be compared using the "same" feet of head rating for this efficiency rating to be valid. Most skimmers efficiency rating falls into 20% (very low, 80% of the pumps output is lost) to 85% (the highest possible, only 15% of the pumps output is lost) range. The higher the number the more efficient the skimmer. Using less electricity (a smaller Pump needed to do the same work) and creating less heating of the aquarium water.

Skimmer output (GPH) / Pump rating (GPH) = % efficiency.
e.g. A 300 GPH skimmer discharge rate / pump (cap 1800 powerhead) rated at 380 GPH@4ft. = 79% efficiency

I bought a Mag nine and have scaled it back with a ball valve. Unfortunatley the valve I bought is like a toggle switch not a garden tap so I cannot adjust the level to what I prefer.

How white or thick should the level be in the "shaft" (can I say that) of teh skimmer? When I have the pump on almost full there is no visible water current in the shaft just pure foam? unfortunatley that is difficult to adjust. I currentley have it with alot less air than I want and the actual water flow almost three quarters the way up. I am pulling about 600Ml of skimate every 3 days. I think this is because I have not had my skimmer working for 3 weeks which has resulted in a bad cyno bloom.

Any suggestions? My main concern is when I first plug the skimmer in and adjsut the foam so a nice dry foam is pumping out, it drops after 1 hour then does not foam from then on.

Do I need 3D glasses or something for that picture?

I use a mag9.5 for mine BUT-- with a valve on the air input.

I run the super reef devil (slightly different from yours... but effectively the same skimmer) elevated so that the output gate is about 3" above the water level in the sump. As well, I have a CPVC gate valve on the air input.

I run the mag9.5 wide open, and just adjust the air going into the skimmer. It's *MUCH* more stable (it was extremely unpredictable before that; overflowing often) And I get much smaller bubbles than I did before. Decent, dry foam. I was ready to throw it away before I added the air valve and the mag9.5.

JME.

Mr.Sandman also has a very informative page that describes adding a beckett to that skimmer (specifically, yours, not mine) I tried it, but I had better success just adjusting the air. the beckett didn't get enough air in my case.

Good luck!

beckett mod = smaller bubbles = dry foam. I think it's explained on Ramon's reef page.

The valve is a 1/2" cpvc gate valve. It's put on a 3' flexible hose so that the input is fresh air from outside the stand.

The type of valve is not important. Some suggest using duct tape to close the valve off about half-way to see how it affects the bubble size/foam production. Whatever works. I chose a gate valve because it has more room for adjustment than a ball valve.

The cpvc is the tan-colored stuff. The size of cpvc denotes the outer diameter of the pipe. As opposed to pvc, which is gauged according to inner diameter.

hth,

R.
