Howdy all,

New here and already have a question.

Today I noticed that our Royal Gramma appears to have a chunk torn from her (we call her Emma) tail fin. She had no marks before today. Ours is a nano reef so not many possible culprits. What might have caused it? Oscellaris clown, cleaner shrimp, hermit, power head intake, sickness? Any thoughts?

TIA.

Could be a mantis shrimp. Have you heard any clicking noises coming from the tank? Other than the hermits are there any other crabs in the tank?

No other crabs (that I'm aware of). I have not heard any clicking noises but I'm not sure what a mantis click sounds like. Someone suggested a large bristleworm might be capable. The Royal Gramma does hide in the rockwork quite a bit.

It could have been almost anything. I wouldn't worry, assuming the Gramma is healthy it will grow back quickly.

If the hermit is anything but very samll, I would put my bets on him.

I doubt it was a bristleworm, most (all??) don't even have teeth, they can't attack a healthy live fish.

None that could go undetected in a nano anyway.
