Hello,

I have ph questions.

Are there any good articles that explain exactly what ph is and what it does and how to change it and........

My tap water on my old well was 4.2 Since that was to low we had to get a Ph adjusting system. This brought it up to 7.5 I used that im my FO tank for 1 year. I would add the salt to the water, add a Ph buffer called 8.2 and heat and aerate overnight. My Ph in my tank was 8.2 all the time.

A few months ago we had a new well drilled. Now the Ph is at 5.5 and I have to hook up the Ph adjuster and get it serviced, but I haven't done that yet. Now, the whole tank was taken down and completely filled with this new water, I have used this water for my water changes, and I have not added the Ph 8.2 once because it got moved down to the basement and I forgot about it.

Now why is my Ph in the tank still 8.2?

what am I missing?

Thanks for any input.

Consider the materials within your tank, kh. If they're calcareous (or the majority, anyway), the calcium can be "dissolved" by such low pH (acid to base, yeah?) water, thus releasing compounds the not only help keep the pH high, but help to keep it high.

If I'm not mistaken, I think that your synthetic salt mix should take care of the ph. I use RO/DI water for all my changes and feeding, and never use buffers always have 8.1 to 8.2 readings.

Thanks for the article ReefnR. Read the first part last night, will probably finish tonight. I guess this means that I should probably not bother with the buffer until tests show that I need it. Well that would make sence. The thing is My first LFS sold me the can of buffer and told me I would definitly need to add it to all my water. I have been buying it ever since. Now, do you think they just made an easy sale or is that something that you should add when you have a new tank with no live rock and no DSB?

Thanks for all the input
