Is anyone using dolomite, as a magnesium supplement, in their calcium reactors?
Does it work?
Where do you purchase dolomite?

Thanks

I used it YEARS ago for my first reef tank. Still have it, actually (I almost never throw anything away that I think I might be able to use at a later date). I couldn't tell you anything about its use for magnesium or anything else other than a crushed coral substitute. Mine is fairly small-grained, about 1mm-2mm sized grains. Worked well for me, and my Caulerpa. (Also kept stonies, what are now known as LPS and SPS, as well as MANY softies, and my prized T. derasa.)

I plan on adding it to my reactor once I find some. Possibly this weekend.

I've heard it works in the past - as in just a handful or two in your reactor right along with the regular media. Dolomite is Calcium Magnesium Carbonate (in case you didn't know), so it should produce the intended result. However, I don't know how the solubility compares to aragonite.

There are a bunch of threads on it over at RC. Here's one:

Seems like it's OK in limited quantities. Probably would be a good idea to have a Mg test kit laying around...
