Hello all,

I am new to all of this and am doing alot of research and question asking before i take the plunge. I am looking at getting an Oceanic 140 tank that is reef ready. My question is what lighting would you all suggest for this tank. I want to be able to keep just about anything in this tank, the full spectrum if that is possible. I am just concerned about the lighting on this tank due to the deepness and am concerned about heat generation from the metal halides.

Thanks in advance to all who reply to this post.

You could either do 2 400 watters, or if you are worried about heat, perhaps two 250 watt hqi pendants, some which throw as much light as a 400 watter(with the right reflector), but transfer less heat. Use higher kelvin bulbs or maybe an icecap 660 for supplemental actinics (2 x 110watt- get the 660 ballast regardless as it is not much more than the 430, which is for two bulbs, and you may need the flexibility later) I had a 150 watt hqi(10k Ushio) with VHO actinics and it was fantastic!

Good luck, I like the deeper tank, and if you are going with a 4-6 inch DSB, you are only talking about a 22-24 inch deep tank anyway...

PS: Halide heat is an issue, but it is surmountable. Go with MH from the beginning, you will eventually want them anyway, trust me!

I agree with Entacmaea, if you want to be able to keep anything (including SPS and clams) then you will definitely want to go with MH. 250's at least for that deep of a tank but 400's would be better.

Hope that helps!

i know exactly what you're talking about. i used to work at a LFS and we carried them. if you can, just get the tank with the overflow. i think the plumbling kit comes with it, but if it's extra, don't get it. instead, build a durso stand pipe for the down draft:

and build a spray bar for the return (about $3.00)

see the black bar at the top back of the tank:

use a glass tank, acrylic tank, rubbermaid container, or whatever for the sump. you'll save some money. you can drill the side of AGA glass tanks. i did it for my premix tank for water changes:
