If your reading this, Thanks in advance.

I've had this tank for over a year and this little Clown was my 1st marine fish. Until a few weeks ago, I had not lost a fish in about 6-8 months. Two weeks ago I THOUGHT my pygmy angle had Ick. I gave him a quick FW dip and moved him to a hospital tank, he looked fine, even ate in the new home, but he didn't make it through the night.

Back to the Clown. He has on his belly a dark gray, almost black, patch. Other than that he seems great. Very active, eating well, no scratching normal resperation, clear eyes... all good. Infact, he is so active & moving so fast, I can't tell if this is a "fuzzy patch" on his skin or an indentation or neither.

Water tests great. Other fish seem fine.

Doesn't seem to be "Clown Desease" or Black Ick.

Grav, be sure to check in the sump also where you posted this question, Fishaholic has some good stuff there for you.

Hope your clown is OK, they are tough little guys and can usually pull through.

As you have noticed, freshwater dips are EXTREMELY stressful on fish. Their physiology is not set up to adapt to the sudden lack of ions in the water which causes their bodies to flood with water. Marine fish have to 'drink' water constantly in order to keep enough water in their system, so even a short dip in FW is very detrimental.

Also, FW will only work to remove larger external parasites. It does nothing for bacterial or fungal infections in many cases (esp not bacterial). I am a big proponent of not using FW except in dire cases, because fish typically will not live through the ordeal. If you do have to use FW, then you MUST match the pH and temperature of the water. Even using a 50% dilution of tank water will work to balance things out and remove most external parasites.

Sure looks like the same problem as described in the link by Podman. Do you have zooanthids? If not, it could be some other non-host LPS. If you have no such things, and the fish is acting fine and eating, I wouldn't worry too much.

Actualy looks quite different. My fish have small spot that vary in shape and are deep black. They tend to be no larger than say a ball point pen tip !! And it hasn't gona away either... Looks like I'm stuck with spotted clowns ;)

Try to see if you can tell if there's a film like substance over the discoloration...

Well, I was thinkin about it... and I don't know a whole hell of a lot about fish, but I'm curious as to whether or not you've seen another fish picking on that little clownfish? It looks kinda like bruising, which is possible, but with a spot that big I would think that might be fatal!

If he's acting a-ok, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you see it pop up on your other fish

I've been thinking about it more myself now.

For some reason he has always loved one of the returns from the filter, hangs out there all the time. I moved a zoo cover rock RIGHT under it about 2 weeks ago.

That COULD be it.

Thanks Reef, Anemone, and Rover for all the feedback.

Can't tell you how nice it is to have someone to hash this out with other than the LFS.

Bump and Final words on the topic... good news!!!

Everything turned out fine. The fish never acted anything other that his normal self. I moved the zoos from his return and though the bruse seemed to move a little and change shape, it has been shrinking ever since my last post.

Today, it is just a tiny little dot, just waiting for the day I can't see it.

Thanks again everyone for they help when I needed it.
