Sometime tonight or tomorrow morning I'm gonna order 88lbs. (2 boxes) of this rock for my 75gal. FOWLR system I'm setting up. It's Fiji rock from Marine Depot. Plan to have it delivered on Saturday so it'll get overnight shipping. $300 for 88lbs. shipped, plus $15 for Saturday shipping(or will it be +$30 since it's 2 boxes? ??? )

The tank is full of RO/DI water and IO salt @ 1.021(gonna raise that to 1.023 i think) and @ 79°. I'm runnin 3 Maxi-Jet 1200's, a CPR Bakpak(i know, only rated for 60gal...still better than my SeaClone), 4 NO flourescent tubes, 2" of Southdown sand, and a 3lb. piece of LR from my nano to head-start the cycle a while. The water's still milky from the southdown, but most should settle by Saturday.

Here's the link and below's a picture of it.

go ahead w/it? wait? different supplier? more/less rock?

thanks

I am interested in Fiji LR from Marine Depot so I will follow this thread closely.

Please let us know the details of your experience with Marine Depot and the rock itself. I am curious to know how much and what kind of life is on the rock and if the rock is shapely compared to Florida Aquacultured chunks.

Thanks.

Be careful with their LR. I've heard mixed reviews on it. I would go with rock from Dale at www.gulf-view.com. I've seen pictures of his "base" rock that looks like fiji show pieces.

I took 44#s for a new 30g I'm setting up. I paid $162 (better to spend 12 on quicker than $15 for Sat...

Good news
It came quick, I feel I got at LEAST 44#s the shapes and sizes were cool. Cant beat the price with a stick.

Bad news:
The rock I got, looks NOTHING like this pic. Upon the tank settling the comment from people in my office was not. "Wow that is cool" but "wow, you paid $150 for cement from a demolished building."

It will be in the tank for 2 weeks on Friday, I've blasted the rock, sediment and crud is falling off and the clean up crew is doing it's thing. It is getting it to the point were it is starting to look like it actually came from the ocean. Some nice colors are coming out, and there is ONE tiny little coral (know those boring little white ones?)

But I don't see ANY:
Fan worms, flat worms, SPS, zoos, sponges, Pods, really not much of any kind of exciting life.

Never had un-cured rock before, and this was half the reason for doing it this way, but I was expecting a little more.

Heh, you are not the only one who got cold praises from friends when they discovered how much money you've spent over a few rocks.......

Those idiots, they will never know....................

Hopefully, your rocks may be seeded and life will sprung out of it in a few weeks. Personally, I have pretty good experiences with Dale's rocks, aka gulf-view.com

Sorry,

Should have been more clear, I got the rock from Marine Depot Live.

Yea, and it is looking better all the time. Even base rock with a just a little color will start to look a lot better in 3 to 6 months. Compared to paying $8 / # at the LFS, I think it was a good deal. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'm a 7 on the purchase, perhaps because they set the expectation too high. I just find that Pic a "promise" that the product didn't live up to.

I just checked that link, and for the mid-grade rock at $3/# + $40 to ship to the airport... also a decent deal.

long story short, looks like I might have to put off the rock till next Friday. Sat's now busy for me, Mon-Tues business affected by Labor Day, Wed-Thurs start school, Friday I don't have classes. Ugh, I dont wanna wait a whole other week, but I don't have many choices :(

Anyways, Emperator, water has been mixed for about, oh, I'd say a week now. And 1.025?! 8O I'm not saying you're wrong, but I've always thought 1.024 was like, the upper end.

grav, thanks for the info on your experience! Since I have another week now, I guess I have time to check out gulf-view and eastcoastclams. About gulf-view...2 questions. 1) Because it's a lil more dense than Pacific rock, will I get less rock per lb. of Florida rock? 2) Also, because it's aquacultured, I'm worried that it won't have the same amount of necessary bacterias and pods....need I worry about these?

anyways, thanks for your thoughts guys! I'll keep ya posted if anything new happens :)

and you link me up or post a pic?
I received 250 pounds of Gulf-View "base" rock on June 27, 2003. It was unbelieveable! I have posted a detailed account of my experience with it, along with pictures. Here are the links:

My detailed post on WetWeb

Comments from another fellow who bought Gulf-View rock after reading of my experience

In short, I think Gulf-View's rock, prices, and service cannot be beat. Their seed rock was originally lace rock from the Bahamas, so it's lighter and more porous than other Florida aquacultured rocks. It's been down something like 13 years, so the life on it is truly amazing.

Feel free to email me for additional pictures or information.

you'd be surprised at the amount of reefers (especially sps only guys) that run their salinity hgher than normal. i personally keep my tank at 1.026. judging with my own eye, i have found my acro's to do better at 1.026.

good luck with your tank.
