Are there any trigger species that can be housed in a tank as small as a 55 gallon as adults and arent extremely aggressive?

Not really, not as adults anyhow. My wife got a small (1") pineapple trigger about 2 years ago, kept it in her 29 for a year or so. Past several months it's been in our 75 gal reef, though, even though he hasn't gotten much bigger (bout 2" or so now).

I would say generally no. Most of the less aggressive triggers, the Niger for example, tend to grow very fast. I have a Niger that has grown from 2-3" to over 6-7" in about a year. On the other hand, my Huma is still around 5-6" even though I have had him for over 6 years. Moreover, my Huma is one of the more peaceful fish in my tank. I suppose that my Huma would be ok in a 55g, but only if housed with very few other fish. Nevertheless, I still think he would outgrow a 55g eventually.
