Cross contamination can be an issue, if all the conditions in your tank are conducive to cyano to begin with... lighting doesn't affect it, and cyano loves warm temperatures. Good water circulation helps against it, water changes also.
I agree with the above, and with BangBang. Cyano is a stage that just about all tanks go thru...it can vary from mild to depressingly annoying. And it can return. Be patient! Manually remove as much as you can, and make sure your water quality is excellent.
I believe skkyy is referring to Red Slime Remover, a product that is reef safe and kills cyano. I have seen this used, it works well.
But like I mentioned, the cyano can return if conditions for it are still there.

Unleashed is right, if condition exists, cyno will return no matter how much you nuke the tank. I know it can be eyesore, but get the 10ppm Nitrite taken cared first. You should first strive to get zero nitrite, and under 10ppm nitrate for a week, before you starting to address the cyno issue. Anything you add now, doesn't matter if it's medication, antibiotics, or detrivore, will not significantly improve your current problem.

Hi all,

EmilyB's approach is right on. Cyano is naturaly occuring. the only way to get rid if it is to out populate it with other algaes.

Good water quality, pph, Ca, and buffer levels. and good lighting.. are all that is needed to promote good algae growth.

i had patches of cyano in all of my tanks for months. and eventually the coraline population took off and out competed for food with the cyano.

also vary your tank lighting hours. In nature there are overcast and dark days. I do the same in mine. every month there is a two day storm that hits my tank at random. and it has done wonders in algae control...

just an idea.. hope this helps

btw- i did not use any cyano killers. just time....

Oh yeah, I didn't use any medication as well, I siphoned the cyno off with water changes. If you use medication to kill them off, the nutrient trapped in them gets re-released back to the water. Siphoning them off serves as nutrient export.

About two weeks ago I did something differentand started feeding my fish pieces of frozen smelt(they love it). However I also noticed a bloom of green hair algae and patches of cyano. I checked my phosphates and nitrate. Both had risen just a tad. My Turbos like it! LOL

found a problem the test kit that i was using was faulty. i have about 0.75 ppm NO2- and about 90ppm NO3-. The NH3 content is1.0 ppm and the pH was a little low at 8.1. Have started dosing Kalk and will increase the dosage to raise pH to 8.3. I will do about a 25% water change tonight do you guys think that is wise and if so should i continue to due this and how often

This is what I would do.....Let the tank continue to cycle until Nitrates read 0. This may take anywhere from a few days to a few more weeks. Don't do a water change. You will continue to have a algae bloom and things will "look" worse before they get better. You may even loose a fish in the process but your tank needs to stablize. The algea that grows will take up the nitrates. When they do and you get a consistent reading of 0 then add some Turbo snails..about three to four large ones. Now as they eat up the algae you may get another small cycle. Don't change the water. Your tank will soon stabilize and look beter. Trust me on this. It just takes time. Just make sure your water has plenty of airation.like from a skimmmer,or other pumps.
