I have a question regarding where the evaporation will occur in the following sump configuration. I am using a 125. The left 31" is a refugium. Then the rest of the sump shows the water line equal all the way across the 10", 17" and 10" sections. My question is:

Will the evaporation only occur in the 10" compartment to the far right as it goes out the return? Or will the evaporation occur across the entire 2/3 of the sump right section as the water level line indicates? I never seem to understand where the water evaporation occurs...any help would be appreciated....I want as much space for evaporation as possible..

I believe that evaporation occurs along all water surface areas. Of course there are factors such as temperature, humidity, and air flow. These all affect the evaporation rate.

it will only evaporate from the end with the return pump in it. this will depend on your configuration but in most of the sump/fuges i have built it occors there. can you post a pic of it just to be certain?

I think the question is where will you see the effects of evaporation with respects to water level. Of course water will evaporate wherever there's unsaturated air interface, but yes you'll see the effects over the whole sump untill the water level drops to the 10" baffle, then you'll only see it to the right of the 10" baffle.
