I just bought a clown fish and a sea anenmome yesterday and everything seemed okay. The last night when I turned off the tanks light he went pretty close to the waters surface and just stayed there than he swam back down. This morning I woke up and he was just swimming in place all day. Then he went near the anenmome and just sat there on his side occasionally moving. I am very worried please help me. what is wrong if anything is wrong?

Sounds normal to me too. What are you expecting this fish to do?

My false percula stays in the same spot most of them time, but ocasionally wanders about.

Thanx for the help. It just seemed weird that he was just laying on his side everything is fine now though. I just got worried about my poor old clownfish.

Sounds normal, but what exactly do you mean "laying on its side"? This statement could either be good or bad.

Well during the day he kind of swims in place on his side but not completely on his side. Then when it gets later he goes to the top of the tank and just stays there stareing at his reflection almost. Maybe he is lonely?Could this be possible? Should I purchase another clown?

No, I doubt he is lonely.

How's the water circulation in the tank? Do you have skimmer in the tank? If not, try increasing the O2 level in the tank by either add a air pump to aerate water, or turn one of the powerhead towards the surface. Surface agitation will facilitate gas exchange in the water.

FishFreak,
How old is your clown? Is he still a juvenile? From what you have told us, it sounds to me that it is exhibiting normal behaviour. I purchased three baby percs about 3-4 months back and for the first month or two, all of them stayed at the top of the tank swimming sideways... At first I thought I got brain damaged fish or something... but eventually one starting exhibiting "normal" clownfish behaviour (he finally swam down and began hosting in the hammer) and one more soon followed it. One of the three still stays on the top almost the entire day swimming on its side, but he is still healthy and active. Just give your clown some time to get used to its new home. Sounds like you have an acceptable host for it; that should eventually entice it to come down and start acting "normal". But don't expect it to swim around much... if you've read any of the clown fish or anemone fish books (if you haven't I highly recommend you do), you should remember that in the wild they never stray more than a few feet from their host their entire lives. One last thing, from everything I've heard and observed about clownfish, they rarely exhibit "normal" behaviors. HTH!

First off, determine the source. What are your tank parameters???
Copper will kill your anemone, so don't treat your tank.
I'd remove the clown and treat him in a hospital tank with hypo.
Keep an eye on your parameters, test often!

Hes eating a little but I got it all taken care of. I got an invertbre safe medicine for him. The damsels must of been bothering the clown fish so the store is taking the damsels back. The man at the LFS said the clown will be fine so im trusting him. Thanks for the help my clown might not be here without you guys.

I think your clown is sick by your description. Is there any spots, dots, or excessive mucous on the body?

hate to be the one to tell you, but i wouldnt worry about necessarly treating with meds. First things first. You have to determine the source of the ICH. Maybe he had it before you even bought it, sometimes the dots are hard to see. also if in the begining stages, the little dots are sometimes not even present.

Then i would test your water and make sure all of the params are in check.

if these are all in check, I will explain to you what my method is for treating ich on clowns.

Get a good healthy flake food he will eat, then get selcon, Zoe and galic extract. Soak the food in all of this stuff for as long as possible, ie overnight if you can. Then feed often, not heavily, just often. 3 times a day if you can. Just make sure your not leaving excessive food in the tank.

Give the clown a good long month doing this, all along making sure that all the water params are in check and your system is stable.

This method has proven very sucessful for me in the past. ICH can be over come by a healthy fish's immune system. good luck!

Well today had to bem one of the worst april fools days of my life. When I got home from my soccer it turns out my clown just decided to die. I was trating him but that didnt work. My mom is so pissed she wants to throw the tank away because we have lost more than just 1 fish. The LFS is going down the tubes because it sold me a clownfish and the 2 day i noticed white spots. Today when I looked at my clown it was on its back breathing very heavily and dieing with some tatered fins and lots of white spots. The lady at my LFS slipped out that they get ICH there frequently. AHHHHHH!!!! Im am so pissed and if this happens again I think my moms gonna run in and scream at the LFS owners for being horrible. I have no clue what to do and im very MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!          :x

Ok, thats a mistake, welcome to reefkeeping, we have all been through that mistake.

Some questions: What size tank, what lighting are you using, and what are your parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) levels. How long has this tank been set up? How did you cycle the tank? What filtration are you using?

Second- You may want to set up a small quarantine tank- many new fish will come down with ich initially, once you get them through quaranting (2weeks) with no disease, its usually safe to put into your main tank.
