I've built my stand and decided on the stain for the outside. My question is what waterproofing paint or sealer should I use for the inside and the top of the stand where the tank will sit?

The outside will be stained and then two coats of polyurethane will be applied. I could just poly the inside and top to waterproof as well, but I thought that there might be something better to hold up against the constant barrage of saltwater and humidity.

Would Thompson's Water Sealer work very well? What about a coat of exterior paint and then a coat of Thompson's?

Thanks guys.

Thompson's will work better than regular poly, since it is for outside use. I used Kilz primer, it is already white, and pentrates unpainted/unsealed wood very well. Either the primer or thompson's should work fine.

When I built my stand this past summer, I found an exterior / marine-grade poly. Forget the company, but it's holding up really well.

I do have some Kilz left over from painting a room of the house. I wonder if I give a good couple of coats of Kilz and then a good coat or two of Thompson's would work.

What do you guys think of that?

Like I've posted several times in the past, I use melamine (plastic) paint by Varathane. Great stuff. 2 or 3 coats for areas that will get wet. You could go overboard (pun intended :) ) and use marine epoxy paint but be prepared for many $$.

Mogo,
THe only thing that I can find when I search for either Melamine or Varathane is Rust-O-Leum paint. I imagine this isn't quite what you were describing.

Do you have any other information? What exactly is the product you use?

"Varathane Colours in Plastic"- "Plastic Enamel"- Melamine Finish. The Manufacturer is Flecto. I should have posted the manufacturer first. Appologies.
