Now that my phosphates are down to an acceptable level (thanks to my new RO/DI), I've decided to rip out all of my crappy, overpriced, LFS LR and order 60 lbs or premium coraline rock from Dale at gulfview. I have hair algae on my rock now that is slowly going away. Once I rip this crap out, I shouldn't have to worry about it comming back on the new rock if I keep the nutrients out of the water, right? Also, my favorite multi-colored colony rock has been growing hair algae like crazy since I upgraded to MH. It's very hard to manually pull it off the rock since the zoo's are all over. Should I just frag off all the polyps and put them on the new rock?

don't waste perfectly good rock! cleanup the water, then add some janitors, mythrax crabs, snails etc...and wait...

algea isn't always bad, it is just a sign of a maturing tank that needs some more time to fix itself...with your help of course.

Thanks, but here is my plan. I was unhappy with my rock anyway, so what I plan on doing is putting the old rock into a tub with minimal lighting to get rid of the algae and then seed it with some fresh coraline. When it looks decent, I was going to use a few pieces in my tank and trade/give away the rest. I have/had every hair algae eater you can imagine from mithrax, various snails, hermits, LMB, chevron tang, lettuce nudi, etc.

Forgot to mention, the reason for all of the algae was a defective membrane in my old RO/DI. My new unit came in the other day and it's reading 0ppm.
